I did a system recovery but there is no sound now and it's showing no audio device. Windows audio service is working and realtek is enabled. I've seen online that this is a common problem with these systems and that if your audio driver didn't install off your disc after a system recovery then your chipset driver may not have either.

I tried to get the drivers on gateway's site but the site does not work properly in IE or Firefox so I can't get to the drivers. Is there a free driver program that would find and download the needed drivers so I could fix the problem?

Gateway 838GM Desktop
WinXP Media Pro SP2 (will be back to SP3 soon)
Augsburg Intel D915GAG mb

My apologies for posting here. I saw afterward that I should have posted this in the audio and video forum.

Gateways website should work fine with any web browser, especially IE.
It is best to get the drivers from them as their equipment is OEM and their drivers are designed to work with the device

I just tried it but was unable to locate your model number on their site.
Could you please confirm the model #
In the beginning there was the command line.

I thought 5389 was the series, no that is the part#. I'll look and see if I can find anything different.

Ok there is no GMxxxx series info and I have looked on the computer, the box it came in, and the user guide. The only thing listed is the 838GM model#. Neither the GM series, 800 series, or the 5000 series showed my computer listed under them on gateway's site when I looked earlier today. I think 838GM is all there is to go with. Mine does not look like the one shown on their site.

Their site appears to be messed up. When you select XPpro 32 as the OS, it offers only vista 64bit ones.

So,

For laughs, I tried all of the Vistas, and an XP came up..... :censored:(under vista business 64, third one down)

I am guessing this is your driver

An error on gateway site, it appears to me.

says sigmatel, good for 32 or 64 bit XP. it's 23MBs, and the version is 5.10.5067.0

check in your device manager if this is the version currently installed.

The only thing I have is the realtek audio driver 5.10.0.6043, but I have no codecs or legacy drivers. It's 32bit xp btw. Would the download you provided replace those I'm missing?

I don't think it could hurt to try it, if you have no audio now. I have never crashed a PC with a wrong audio driver. If it's the wrong one, the install will abort, or nothing will change.
Give it a shot.

It would not install saying there is no device. Any ideas?

Install specky, and see what it lists your audio device as, and post it here. link

All of these in the list except for Realtek show Location Unknown and a blank device list.

Speccy shows no details other than listing realtek.

The "unknown" entries in dev mgr are normal. Same on my PC.
Did you try to right clik on realtec hi def in dev mgr and select uninstall?
If you didn't, try that, then on the uppermost entry in dev mgr, right click and select "scan for hardware changes".
