Thank you, again, in advance.

My husband's computer, the one in the next room from this one, picked up a virus that managed to get around Avira AntiVir. This baby didn't just send us to random websites, it shut down the web all together. We were unable to soft boot, to use add/remove programs in the control panel, to run Malwarebytes or Spybot S&D. The bogus antivirus (not named) blocked pages and repeatedly asked us if we wanted to run our antivirus program. When I put my flash drive in a USB port, the computer did not recognize the flash drive. I finally hit the surge bar and got safe mode to run. That's when I discovered it created an administrator account with the password "password." After I logged on as the bogus Admin, I changed the password, then changed to our real account. I was able to run MB & Spybot in safe mode. MB found nothing but Spybot found several things that it 'fixed' but when I rebooted, still no internet, still no recognition of any USB port, no soft boot, no way to add or remove programs, etc. From this computer, I downloaded all the Bleeping Guide's programs onto my last blank CD and successfully ran all the programs on the infected computer. For some reason, thank goodness, my flash drive was recognized this time around, which is how I am able to reproduce the logs.

I apologize in advance because I am sure I've given you TOO much information in my attempt to give you all the information. Thing is, not only is the Husby's 'puter on the fritz--the TV isn't working right, either.

Hello and welcome. I apologize for the delay. If you no longer need help with this issue, we would appreciate you letting us know. Otherwise, please perform the following steps so I can have a look at the current condition of your machine. I realize that you have already posted logs, but because of the time that has passed I'd like a fresh set.

Posted Image Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.

DDS.scr
DDS.com
DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
---------------------------------------------------
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
Posted Image Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop.
  • Double click the exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

    Posted Image
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

If you have trouble running GEMR:
  • Make sure that your security software is disabled
  • Uncheck the box next to "Files" this time also
  • If you still can't run it, try in the Safe Mode
Please include the following in your next post:
  • DDS.txt and Attach.txt logs
  • GMER log

I won't have time to do this until tomorrow soonest. I would still appreciate the help although the status on the machine has changed considerably since I posted this topic. Yesterday I booted it up regularly (not in safe mode) for the first time and it seems to be working fairly normally, but I don't trust it. Thank you in advance and no problem with the delay. I knew Bleeping computer would answer as soon as possible.

That's fine, Marion. Just post the new logs when you get a chance and I'll take a look.

OK, the problem returned. Go figure. I got home from work and yeah, the hitchhiker/virus/Thing was up and at 'em again. Knew it had only taken a holiday. It was still posing as an antivirus program, sending us to an adult website, not allowing us to run any of the stuff from Bleeping that I'd downloaded on the desk top. This next part, I don't know if it's me or the THING, but I had a DICKENS of a time starting up in Safe Mode. I do mean a DICKENS OF A TIME. Backtracking, when I tried to run DDS in regular mode, I'd get a quick view of the black and white 'chalkboard' then an error message saying DDS was infected with a virus, did I want to be unprotected, etc. Right clicking the Thing wouldn't allow me to close or move it. I could move the windows beneath, but that was about it. Sorry if too much info....When I was finally able to get on safe mode (had to remove the NetGear thumbdrive which is how the husby connects to our wireless network)

First time this happened, last week, I unplugged the NetGear almost first thing. Just saying, here. Thought I could foil the Thing if it couldn't 'feed' online. Today it took me half an hour of turning off the surge bar and hitting various Fkeys to find safe mode. Couldn't find it (safe mode) until I unplugged my wireless. So, could it be feeding on line? Is there a way to force safemode on any computer with any OS? Like, unscrewing the hard drive or something? I'm wondering, because I faked power surges in mid boot, pulled the plug and smoked a cigarette outside before plugging it back in. The only thing(s) I didn't do was hit anything with a hammer or let the dogs have at it.

The good news is that my password held up for that bogus Administrator file. At least, I hope it is good news. I was awful scared that there was yet ANOTHER bogus administrator whose password I would have to crack.

I'm a tad bit worried about cross contamination with my machine. I'm using the thumb drive between computers. We share a wireless network. Our printer is wireless.

Sorry again with all the extra words.

Thanks,
Marion

Marion:

OK, let's not fake anymore power surges as that can be hard on your computer. Download these and run them in the Normal Mode if you can:

Posted Image Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. There are 3 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one. You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.com
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.scr

Note:

You will likely see a message from this rogue telling you the file is infected. Ignore the message. Leave the message OPEN, do not close the message. Run rkill repeatedly until it's able to do it's job. This may take a few tries. You'll be able to tell rkill has done it's job when your desktop (explorer.exe) cycles off and then on again.

Once the tool has run, do NOT reboot the machine, and then try to run ComboFix (instructions below).

Posted Image Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please include the following in your next post:
  • ComboFix log

When I put the thumbdrive into the husbands USB port, his system shut down. <<just information.>> Windows did a CHKDSK then I was able to follow instructions--except I'm not sure if ComboFix was actually on the hard drive or if I just put a short cut there. Here's hoping you are drinking your second cup of coffee right now.

Thanks a second million!

Marion:

This requires that ComboFix be on the desktop of the infected PC, not on your flash drive.

Posted Image Open Notepad Go to Start> All Programs> Accessories> Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad ) and copy all the text inside the Codebox by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above DDS::

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:8075
uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = <local>

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

Then disable your security programs and drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

Posted Image

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Posted Image You have this program installed, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM). Please update it and run a scan.

Open MBAM
  • Click the Update tab
  • Click Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • The program will close to update and reopen.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Uncheck any entries from C:\System Volume Information or C:\Qoobox
  • Make sure that everything else is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Please include the following in your next post:
  • ComboFix log
  • MBAM log

Things appear to be running swimmingly on Terry's computer. I was able to download combofix directly onto his computer, no thumbdrive involved. There was nothing for MB to delete.

Thanks a third million,
Marion

Hi Marion,

You ran ComboFix successfully, but you didn't use the script I gave you. If you've successfully downloaded ComboFix to the desktop of your hubby's PC, you need to save that notepad file and drag it onto the icon (see my last post for detailed instructions).

Post the log once you've done that - or post back if you don't understand the instructions.

My friend, the log created was too long to post. :( I'm not sure what to do now.

Trying to keep my upper lip stiff. <<tremble>> :<

Hi,
Sorry, I was frustrated and tired. I'm including the latest MB, too, for just in case.
Thanks,
Marion

Marion:

How is the computer running now? Please do this next:

Posted Image Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Java™ 6 Update 12 can be updated from the Java control panel Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now. An update should begin; follow the prompts. If it does not, let me know.

Once the install is complete...

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
    • Applications and Applets
    • Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
Posted Image Please run ESET Online Scanner
  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\ProgramFiles\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt into your next reply.
Please include the following in your next post:
  • ESET log
  • How is the computer running now?

Hi,
Sorry it took me a couple of days. Anyway, I updated java and ran ESET, but there was not detail button for ESET, no log file like the other programs gave me. I de-selected the "fix it" check. There was another box I could have checked, but I didn't. I have pasted the only information I could find.

The computer is running just fine. Terry even says it's running faster, but I suspect it's because I cleaned up his task bar.

Before I forget to ask again, should I keep the bogus Administrator account so that another hijacker can't make one? I think I told you that I changed the password. Also, I set my computer with my account as Administrator. Is that cool? Will that protect me from getting a hijacker? What I don't understand is how this stuff got through our antivirus in the first place.

Thanks for your help.
Marion
