Hiya,
I have recently purchased a Seagate Expansion 320GB External hard drive, which is powered by USB.

I plugged it into my Dell studio laptop which runs Windows Vista Home Premium and it all worked fine. When I tried to remove the hard drive using 'Safely remove hardware' my laptop blue screened and rebooted. I then tried to remove it using the 'eject' option when right clicking on the device in 'My computer', and the same reuslt occurred - blue screen then reboot.

(I have seen in other posts that people request more infomation about the BSOD, so I ran the BlueScreenView.exe and have pasted the results of the BSOD below the rest of this message, hope it is useful!)

I have tried to change the cable (someone suggested this as a solution) which made no difference, and I have tried it in all the other USB ports, same result.
I tried to scan the drive for errors, by going through 'my computer' - 'propeties' - 'tools' - 'error checking'. This started for a few seconds and then blue screened again.

I tried to restore my laptop to an earlier point, and chose a point over a month ago, but this had no effect, the device still caused the laptop to blue screen.

I have run a McAfee scan on my laptop and it found no problems.
My laptop has never had trouble with other external hard drives before.

I tried the device on my netbook, which runs windows 7 starter and there was no problem, the device ejected without blue screening.

Any help fixing this problem would be greatly apprectiated!
Thanks!

The USB drivers you have installed do not have support for "Safely Remove Hardware"
For a quick fix, remove the external usb drive physically without clicking on safely remove hardware first.
This should not give you a BSOD.
Long term fix, check all your USB port and hubs for up to date drivers, if not update them and report back.

Thanks for your help.

I checked all the USB ports and hubs and all the drivers are up to date.

Check the drivers for "Mass Storage Device"
A lot of times this is corrupt rather than the USB drivers causing the issue.
If not then the only thing I would suggest is to not use the safely remove device menu
but instead make sure you are not using the drive then physically remove it, or remove it
when your computer is shutdown.
