Hello,

Looks like I'm one of a growing number of people hit by some kind of Google redirect virus. Whenever I visit Google from any browser other than Safari, a click on almost any search result will send me to a site that is either not what I was looking for (i.e., I get sent to yellowpages.com, the norton antivirus site, etc), or a site that tries to install malware on my machine. Every now and then with Firefox the proper site will start to come up and then Firefox will display "Content Encoding Error". (As a side note, I feel like the redirects to legit sites are actually some type of click fraud, but that's just speculation).

I'm running Windows Vista SP2. So far, I've uninstalled all browsers other than IE8 and Safari. I tried reinstalling Firefox, and that seemed to work for a bit, but once I ran IE again Firefox started redirecting again. Full scans with Microsoft Security Essentials, Malware Bytes Antimalware, Spybot S&D all turn up nothing. DDS and Rootkin Unhooker logs posted below. If anyone could help me out here it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Rich

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Gringo,

Thanks for your help. I followed your instructions. Here's what happened.

I ran everything from a folder called "blah" on my Desktop. My network connection was disabled while I was

running these tests (firewall was enabled), and all applications were closed.

1) Ran Defogger, disabled CD emulation, it did not ask me to reboot.
2) Ran DDS, logs posted below
3) Ran RootkitUnhooker, log posted below

After running these logs, I reenabled my AV and tried Internet Explorer again. When I first ran IE, it

started and then closed immediately. After about the fifth time it launched ok. I went to Google, did a

search, and clicked on the first search result. Instead of going to that link, I would up at

pcsecurityshield.com, so it appears the virus (or whatever) is still on this machine, as I expected it would

be.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had

Ran Combofix. It completed 50 or so stages and then printed out a message saying that explorer.exe was infected. After a while (I wasn't looking at the machine the whole time) the screen went to the Vista logout screen (Logging Out...) and it sat there for at least 30 minutes. I hard powered off the machine, and rebooted it. I logged in to Vista and then got the following message:

C:\Windows\system32\ms.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

Clicked OK to that dialog, and Vista told me that Explorer had stopped working. I clicked "Close the program", and I was left with a black screen. I can move the mouse around but no windows load up. I'm just left with a black screen and a working pointer. Ctrl + Alt + Del does fire up Task Manager. I can run Safari, Notepad, etc, from there, but if I try to run explorer I get the same error listed above.

Here is the Combofix.txt log file from C:\combofix:

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

Booted into Safe Mode. Explorer crashed again with the same message, so I had to fire up Combofix from the Run command of the Task Manager. The Run dialog says that the command will run as Administrator, but when ComboFix started it complained about Access Denied. I let ComboFix run, got a message about Access Denied on Stage 38 but otherwise it seemed ok. It found an infection with explorer.exe, tried to clean, deleted a C:\Windows\system32\ms.dll, created a log and closed. After it closed, ComboFix (I assume) tried to start explorer.exe, but explorer.exe crashed again, however this time it did not give me the message about ms.dll.

ComboFix did not request a restart. I restarted the machine into Safe Mode, and reran ComboFix (after updating it, I got a dialog from ComboFix that said an update was available). I got the same message about Access Denied, but I let ComboFix run and complete (unfortunately it overwrote my earlier log). It again found an infection in explorer.exe, but this time I did not get a message about deleting ms.dll. When it was complete it tried to start explorer.exe again, but again explorer.exe crashed.

The log from the second combofix run is posted below. Any ideas?

Crap, I did just notice that it appears the Microsoft Antimalware Service was running while I ran ComboFix. I didn't realize it had started since explorer wasn't running so I don't have a system tray. I've stopped the service, should I rerun ComboFix?
