My daughter was watching a movie on the computer one day last week. Turned the Computer on and it would not boot up just gave me a black screen with three lines of messages which follow:

1. multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\ntoskrni.exe
2. multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\hal.dll
3. multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\kdcom.dll

it gave these messages whether i tried normal, safe mode, or safemode with networking. After running the recovery diagnostics check start in the recovery mode it did a 60 plus item check showing items passed for all that was checked. started it normally and it looked as if it would go i got the window for xp and then it disapperaed and i thought i had it then i got a blue screen stop coooo21a fatal error f oxcoooo12f followed by two group sets of "0" about 8 in each set. i have tried safe mode, safe mode networking, and last know configuration and i tried one more startup positon and it always acts like it will start but ends with the blue screen with the same fatal error message do not know what else to do or try and the it people at work are not much help either. hopefully someone here has an idea and can help me the computer has files that my kids and i need for work and school. thanks.

Do you have access to a retail copy of Windows XP? This will need to be the same version as your own, eg Home or Pro.

I suspect that your boot.ini file is damaged which may result in not being able to access the Rescue and Recovery partition of this computer. But... let's give it a try. Go to this site and follow their instructions for accessing the Rescue and Recovery partition.
