Dell Inspiron 19200 laptop, XP SP3, 1.6ghz, 2gb RAM, IE7.

Browser being hijacked when clicking on search links in Google, Yahoo, etc. Hitting back button in IE brings me eventually to intended search link. Ran malwarebytes, eset online scanner, superantispyware, bhoscanner, avast. Have done in safe mode as well (except eset) Cleaned what was found, browser still gets hijacked as noted above. Once the hijack happens, computer will also not shut down, have to power down manually.

Also, just recently popped up while computer was sitting idle -

"Security Warning
Application cannot be executed. The file mshta.exe is infected. Do ou want to activate your antivirus software now?"

Cannot bring up task manager, had to again power down manually.

Would like to fix this without reformatting if possible. Thanks for any help you can provide.
