Hello -
Many thanks in advance to anyone that can help out! I had some malware on this particular machine a few months ago, thought I had it cleaned up (was infected through an out-of-date Java installation), but recently -- either due to a new issue or a lingering old one -- had 2 Yahoo! mail accounts hacked and a Facebook account broken into, both using distinct, secure passwords (and only log into those accounts from a single PC). I downloaded a few AV programs to scan (Emsisoft, Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware, MS Security Essentials) everything, and Emsisoft found a keylogger and deleted it (apologies I've forgotten the name of it).

Anyway, while nothing on my system exhibits any issues (but recently it never has), I just want to be absolutely sure I've gotten rid of whatever got me. I've followed the instructions exactly -- http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html -- and am pasting/attaching the requested files. Again, thanks in advance to anyone that can review this and let me know your thoughts.

-Mark

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer :welcome:

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

IMPORTANT NOTE: :exclame:

If the system has been used after topic creation time we need to take a look at fresh logs. So, please post fresh copies of dds.

Regards,
Georgi :hello:

Thanks for the response. I am still trying to figure out if this system is malware free (and specifically keylogger free). Below is an updated DDS.txt, and attached are both the Attach.txt from DDS and ark.txt from GMER. Note that GMER did indicate I have a rootkit issue in this latest scan, which was not present when I originally posted this.

Please let me know if there's anything else I can provide.

Hi malwhipped
Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
I'm maranatha and I will be handling your log to help you get cleaned up.

Please do this in the order given.

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

It's best to disable realtime protection applications as they sometimes interfere with the tool.
Check this link for any applicable programs you may have.
  • Close all open programs and windows
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • Vista and Windows 7 users right click Combofix.exe and select Run As Administrator.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log
Note: Do not mouse click combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

If you are prompted to install the Recovery Console, Please do so.

Now this.

Please follow these instructions for running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware..

Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Click on the Update Tab.
  • Click on the Check for Updates button.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has Updated, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Post the entire report in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Please Copy and Paste the Combofix log, The MBAM log and attach a new GMER log of your C:\ make sure that all boxes are checked except the IAT/EAT box and the Show All box
Thanks
maranatha

Thanks again for your help!

I followed your instructions exactly, but I can no longer get GMER to run. I tried maybe half a dozen times, and it either locks up as soon as it loads (hanging entire computer and forcing a hard reboot), or will lock the computer up just a few seconds into the scan. I tried re-downloading GMER as well to no avail. If you have have any tips/tricks for getting GMER to run, please let me know (it ran last time... not sure what changed on my end). (I even ran a chkdsk /f, rebooted, and waited for a full sector scan of the HD just in case there was something odd causing the issue, and that doesn't seem to have helped.)

Regardless, below are the ComboFix and MBAM logs:

Hi
Can you tell me why combofix was ran 7 times?

Please go here C:\Qoobox open the Qoobox folder and locate the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt file open it and copy and paste the contents of that file here.

If at any time you have problems running the tools I ask you to run please stop and let me know what is happening so I can assist you.
Thanks

Please run this and then see if GMER will then work.

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed

Thanks
maranatha

Apologies for the delay! I thought I had posted a response and just noticed it never appeared. Anyway, I ran CB multiple times prior to creating this thread, as a friend had suggested running it. Anyway, I ran DeFogger and it didn't appear to have disabled anything -- I rebooted for good measure, though it didn't prompt me to and I still can't run GMER. It just locks up my machine -- I even left it running overnight to see and nothing.

Here is the output of the DeFogger log:
defogger_disable by jpshortstuff (23.02.10.1)

Hi
OK thanks, I'm not seeing anything out of the ordinary with MBRCheck.

Lets download and run GMER, this time in safe mode.
You may want to print these instructions or copy them to a place you can get to them in safe mode.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • To enter into Safe Mode / Instructions
  • Disconnect from the Internet.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
Please uncheck the following settings that we do not want in our scan.
  • IAT/EAT
  • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive, which is typically C:\
  • Show All (This one is important, so do not miss it.)

Thanks
maranatha

I tried this last night -- the first time it froze the computer immediately (in safe mode) as it does when I run it normally. I did a hard reboot, tried again (again in safe mode), and this time it loaded, after which I was allowed to make my selections and hit 'Scan'. I let that run overnight and it locked up the computer partway through the scan. I had to do a hard reboot again to recover. Thoughts?

Apologies for the delay. I had to reboot a few times before it finally loaded, and then did as you suggested. It came back with "no infection found" (or a very similar prompt indicating everything was fine).

Hi
OK please do this.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
This is a good tool to get rid of the temporary garbage you pick up while surfing the net.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:

Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
Recycle bin

The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All".
Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.
Close ATF Cleaner

Now lets get a on line scan.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner Using Internet Explorer Browser.

It's best to disable real time protection applications as they sometimes interfere with the scan.
Check this link for any applicable programs you may have.

Click on Accept, If your pop up blocker blocks any windows from opening.

Read then Click Accept on the Information page.
Windows Vista users you must open the web browser using the Run as Administrator command.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Under Scan on the left side, Click on My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • Click the “Scan Report” On the left side.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Click the Save Report As button, and in the Browse dialog box, type a name for the scan report file that you want to create and select its type Text file. Click OK to save the file.:
  • Save the text file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Please post the Kaspersky results.

Thanks
maranatha
