I continue to get Spotresults.com popups even though I have run AdAware, Spybot and Bazooka and have gotten rid of everything that could be causing this (or so I thought). Perhaps you can tell me what to do if you have a look at my Hijack This log. Thanks in advance. Cheers

Jayce

Ok, it looks like nothing is getting rid of spotresult.com ... the only time it seems to come up is when I try to go to a page that does not resolve ... such as www.fdslkjfsdalfjsad.com ... it looks like it has replaced my 404 error page ... any suggestions or am I out to lunch?

Hi llcooljayce,
I think you may be suffering from a new version of Look2Me. To find out do this:

Download VX2.BetterInternet Finder from here:
http://download.broadbandmedic.com

Once downloaded, open VX2 Finder and hit the "Click to Find..." button. Then the"Make Log" button and copy & paste that log into your next reply.

OK, llcooljayce, you've got the new version of L2M. There is a rather invlolved procedure to get rid of it so please wait for specific instructions before you do anything else. I have to go to work right now so can't give those instructions just yet. If no one else helps you with this, I'll be back this evening and we'll work on it.

Taken from a post by Papakid

Do the following in order and exactly as described.

1. Disconnect from the internet and boot into safe mode.

2. Open VX2 Finder and click the "Click to Find..." button.

3. Click "Delete these files". Two files at a time will be deleted. Keep clicking the delete button until all but one (or more) files are gone. You should get a message that a file can't be deleted.Write down the name and remeber it as "the last file". Just expect that one file won't delete in this step.

4. Click "Open regedit" button. The Guardian registry key will appear.

5. Right click the Guardian key>Permissions>in the popup window click Advanced.

6. Toward the bottom, click to remove the checkmark from the box next to "Inherit from parent the permission entries..."

7. Click OK, then Remove in the "Security" window that pops up. Here is a screenshot. It's for Windows 2000, but should look relatively the same:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/Win2K_Permissions.jpg

8. Close VX2 Finder & reboot back into safe mode.

9. Open VX2 Finder again & click "Find..."

10. Select "the last file" (6bo4svc.dll). Then click Delete.

11. Click the "User Agent$" button.

12. Click "Open regedit" again. Repeat the earlier procedure starting with step 5. and put the checkmark back in the "Inherit from parent..." box>OK.

13. Click "Guardian.reg" button.
.
14. Click 'Find..." button again to check if any more files appear. Save the log and post it in your next reply.

15. Click "Restore Policy".

16. Reboot.

17. Post a fresh HijackThis log along with that last VX2 log.

Any questions, post them now. All but the last step needs to be done off the net. You should probably print out these instructions.

llcooljayce, what Grinler posted is the procedure and should remove the L2M files that are responsible for reinstalling any malware--in your case the "last file" should be 3xvxVfWCodec.dll.

You should know that this thing brings viruses, trojans and spyware along with it, and even if you are succesful in deleting the files with VX2 Finder, you will still have malware on your system that needs to be cleaned up. We should be able to do that with HijackThis and other tools. Also the L2M/VX2 parasite is dynamic and there are no guarntees that eveything will go well with VX2 Finder. But it has worked with most folks with version 124.

Looking forward to seeing your HT & VX2 log. And again don't hesitate to post back with any questions.
