I have a Dell Dimension 9200 computer which I have been asked to check out for a friend. The PC will not boot. It just boots to a black screen. Trying to boot to SAFE mode just brings up the mouse arrow. Ths PC is running Vista. This is what I have done so far:
Used a Vista Repair CD to attempt to repair the installation. This failed (could not detect a problem.
Tried a System Restore - there were none to restore to
Attempted to fix the MBR - no success
Ran all the Memory Tests and Utility checks provided with the PC - all showed passing

I ran Knoppix and was able to save off her documents and pictures. I don't know what else to do. I'm not sure if this is an OS problem or if somewhere they acquired a virus that shut the PC down. I am posting this under MALWARE, but if it should be in a different forum, please feel free to move it. I appreciate any and all help.
Thank you.

Was there malware at first that caused the non booting?

If you have it all backed up why not just reinstall?

I'm really not sure if it was malware or not. It started with a "Floppy Disk seek failure", and they attempted a repair to no avail. PC has never booted back into Vista since. The files and the hard disk is there (I can see it via Knoppix).

Before I attempted a complete repair install from the recovery partition, I'm trying to salvage it for them.

Actually, let's just close the topic. A situation came up where I am actually just rebuilding using the Dell rebuild partition. Thank you for your help.
