I had a similar problem with my computer once. It seems like your mouse might be double clicking. Does the highlighting happen with pretty much everything you click on? Do you have a wireless mouse?
I'm not sure if this would be the solution, but you might need to either try resetting your mouse settings, or get a good (maybe a bit more expensive) mouse with wires, because they are more reliable and don't break as fast.
This is what solved my problem, that's a bit similar to yours, but I'm not sure if it will work for you.
Also try running a full antivirus scan, because you might have downloaded something and its playing round with your mouse and keyboard a bit. It's not life-threatning, just annoying.

Could be the keyboard too. Sounds like a physical hardware problem.
Try beating them up a little. Maybe there's a crumb stuck somewhere.
Always good to have multiples around of mouse and keyboard so you can
troubleshoot these strange happenings.

I hate wireless mouse and kybds too.
