Hi, I'm having a few problems with trojans and would appreciate some help.

System details:
Dell XPS M1530
Windows 7 32bit home premium
Antivirus: AVG free 2011
Firewall: Windows firewall. Previously Commodo firewall (free version), until avg requested an uninstall
Anti-malware: Malwarebytes free version

I recently upgraded to avg 2011. During the install it prompted me to uninstall my firewall to continue, which i did. As soon as the install was finished it flashed up a virus warning. The following processes were detected and removed. Virus name in brackets:
CONHOST.EXE (win32/kryptik.jfx)
IOVERPPLAJB.EXE (win32/FakeSpypro)
DWM.exe (TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen)
CSRSS.EXE (TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen)

I then ran a full system scan, which found:
Trojan PSW.Generic8.AMTQ
Trojan Generic2.0.BBNK
Trojan Generic2.0.BCFM
Trojan Generic2.0.BBTO

Next I ran a full scan with Malwarebytes which detected
2x Trojan.Dropper in files
2x Trojan.Agent in registry values
1x Hijack.Shell in registry values
1x Trojan.FakeAlert.Gen in registry values

All were reported as removed.

The next day I was using the computer, when a fake antivirus program popped up with false scan results. I think it was AntiVirus, and added an icon to the notifications tray with frequent popups. I immediately ran another avg scan, which came up clean, and an avg rootkit scan, also clean. A Malwarebytes scan found another Trojan.Dropper file and registry value.

As a precaution I then entered safe mode and ran an avg scan and a malwarebytes scan. AVG came up clean, but MB detected another Trojan.Dropper file.

Since restarting from safe mode Ive been unable to access the internet with any browser or updater. By changing the proxy settings in Firefox from "no proxy" to "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network" I was able to get online, but only with firefox.

Scans from AVG and MB have so far come up clean, but that might be due to lack of an internet connection.

Here is the DDS log:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:

Hi Myrti,
Thanks for the reply- I can aprreciate your busy at the moment, although I'd be amazed if your ever quiet! Like I said, any help is greatly appreciated.

Since my original post very little has changed. No virus symptoms have appeared, and no scans have picked anything up.

I am still having problems with the internet connection since the safe mode scan- the only program I have been able to connect with is Firefox. This means Ive been unable to update any programs, and may also be why the virus/malware hasnt reappeared

Here are the OTL reports:

Hi,

please run defogger:
Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Followed by ComboFix:
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Ok, I disabled my antivirus using the guide, but when I try and run combofix I get an error :

"Combofix cannot run when AVG is installed.
This is due to AVG's targeting of ComboFix's files/process.
It would be dangerous to continue.

Please uninstall AVG or use another tool."

Thanks.

Im sorry I forgot about that. AVG can not really be disabled, which is why, to ensure that it won't delete ComboFix midprocess, it needs to be uninstalled.

Would you be ok with doing that?

If so please work through this:
You should be able to remove AVG Anti-Virus via Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs,
If you need instructions on how to do so, please consult: How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer

The following removal utility can be used to uninstall the program if the uninstall via Add/remove does not work:

  • Download the latest installation file of AVG from their website
  • After downloading, run teh file and choose the Uninstall Product option in the Select Setup Type dialogue
  • Finish the uninstallation process and restart your computer

If this fails as well, you can try to use AVGremover:

  • Download avgremover.exe and save it to your Desktop
  • Run the file avgremover.exe
  • Confirm that you want to uninstall.
  • Wait until the program confirms the removal
  • Restart your computer
