Hi and Happy New Year.

When I am using search engines (I have tried Google and Yahoo) and click on a search result, I am redirected to different webpages. Initially, the computer seems to be linking to the correct URL, then there is a pause, and a different URL shows up and that webpage loads. Internet Explorer will go to the correct pages if I enter a URL directly or if I click on one of my "Favorites". The redirection only seems to happen from the search engines.

I have performed virus scans with both Webroot Antivirus (with SpySweeper) and Malewarebytes. Webroot removed a virus named "Troj/PDFJs-ML" - which I have never seen before. I also noticed in the Quarantine a virus named "Mal/JavaJar-A" but I am not sure if that was a new one or if it had been quarantined on an earlier scan.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Tom

Hello Gringo - Thanks for your reply. I'm VERY happy to hear from you.

When I returned to my computer a short while after posting to the forum, there was a window notification from Webroot Antivirus saying the computer needed to be rebooted. But everything was locked up solid. I had to shut down using the power button. When I rebooted, I got the normal Windows XP startup screen but then everything stalled, there was a click, and up came the blue screen of death with the following error message:

Stop: c000021a {fatal system error}
The windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

I tried to restart in the last good configuration and in safe mode. Neither worked - I ended up at the same screen of death.

I saw some potential fixes on one of the other Bleeping Computer forums but I decided I'd better wait for someone who knows what they are doing. So the machine has just been shut down since the crash. I'm working from another computer now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Verify the correct drive letter is selected for your USB device then click OK
  • It will install a little bootable OS on your USB device
  • Once the files have been written to the device you will be prompted to reboot ~ do not reboot and instead just Exit the UNetbootin interface
  • After it has completed do not choose to reboot the clean computer simply close the installer
  • Next download http://noahdfear.net/downloads/driver.sh to your USB
  • Remove the USB and insert it in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer
  • Press F12 and choose to boot from the USB

Hello Gringo - and thanks again for the help,

I attempted to boot from the USB following the directions you gave but was unsuccessful.

When booting from the USB, I get the message:
Remove disks or other media.
Press any key to restart.

Pressing a key with the USB attached gives the same message repeated over.

I have one DVD drive that is empty - and no other media attached to the system. If I do remove the USB and press a key, then the computer goes into the normal boot sequence and crashes with the same blue screen.

I looked at the Setup menu and the USB Device is listed as #5 in the Boot Sequence. I tried moving it to #1 but it didn't make any difference.

???

Things don't seem to be going my way. When BurnCDCC opened, it was "Unable to find or allocate a writable CD/DVD device". However, my non-sick computer does have a writable CD drive. Is there any way to get BurnCDCC to recognize it - or should I try again tomorrow on someone else's computer?

Okay - managed to get the CD burned on a friend's machine. Everything worked according to instructions. I append the contents of report.txt:

Hello

There are a couple of things to try so I want to try this way first

Download http://noahdfear.net/downloads/rst.sh to the USB drive
  • Insert the USB drive and CD in the Sick computer and boot the computer from the CD again
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • Expand your USB (sdb1)
  • Confirm that you see rst.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash rst.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located at sdb1 named enum.log
  • Plug that USB back into the clean computer and open it
Please note: If you have an ethernet connection you can access the internet by way of xPUD (Firefox). You can perform all these steps on your sick computer. When you download the download will reside in the Download folder. It can be found under the File tab also. You can similarly access our thread by way of this OS too so you can send the logs that way.

Please also note - all text entries are case sensitive

Copy and paste the enum.log for my review

Hello

I want you to boot back into the usb drive

Now I want you to navagate to this file - /mnt/sda2/WINDOWS/ServicePackFiles/i386/winlogon.exe

Right click on this file and choose copy

Now navagate to this folder - /mnt/sda2/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32

Right click on any open space inside the folder and click on paste (if it asks you to replace a file allow it)

Now lets do the other

navagate to this file - /mnt/sda2/WINDOWS/ServicePackFiles/i386/explorer.exe

Right click on this file and choose copy

navagate to this folder - /mnt/sda2/WINDOWS

Right click on any open space inside the folder and click on paste (if it asks you to replace a file allow it)

now remove the usb and restart the computer and let me know if it boots normaly

Gringo
