My computer once started shows only the wallpaper or background. I can still run programs but the taskbar is gone same with the start button and menu. The desktop icons are also missing. The computer was working fine not long ago, but I had to restart it. My computer had a few trojans that kept redirecting me to another web page or to a site called security analysis. I installed superantispyware and pc tools firewall plus. I restarted after scanning with superantispyware and deleting some malware. Though when i restarted there was just the wallpaper. SO i ran combofix and it restarted again after the scan. It was still the same problem. Even in safemode the desktop icons and taskbar won't load, it just shows a black background saying safemode.

You should not run ComboFix unless you are specifically asked to by a helper.
Also, due to the power of this tool it is strongly advised that you do not attempt to act upon any of the information displayed by ComboFix without supervision from someone who has been properly trained. If you do so,
it may lead to problems with the normal functionality of your computer.

I ran system restore and restored the computer, but it seems to be very slow now.

Hello Lmessi, please press Windows key + R and press enter. Type explorer.exe and press enter. Let me know what you get back.

Also verify if c:\windows\explorer.exe exists.

If not, let me know if you have an XP CD at hand.

regards, Elise

I've fixed it by doing a system restore. I went into safe mode to do some scans with malwarebytes and spybot. I restarted my comptuer normally but its acting as if its in safe mode, which its not.

I have fixed the above problem but now my computer seems to be lagging badly and sometimes freezes. At time i can't open some programs and even Malwarebytes freezes up. I also get messages of content encoding error when using the firefox, it says 'The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression.' Please help.

Lets move this to the Malware Removal forum and do some scans.

Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note - if you get the following warning, just ignore: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Click on Cancel, then Accept.
