Hello and thanks in advance for your help. I believe I have a nasty browser hijack infection.

The machine is a Dell Latitude D410 laptop. OS is WinXP Pro version 2002 with SP3 installed. We use IE8 and Safari browsers. Once the hijack symptoms appeared, Firefox crashes on load every time, and Google Chrome crashes about half the time on load, so we don't use them.

Installed security software is:
- F-Secure Anti-Virus for Workstations. This program provides real-time, on-demand and scheduled scanning, with definition files updated automatically.
- MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. This is the free version of MBAM, which I downloaded and installed after the hijack symptoms started appearing. I keep the definitions updated manually, and use if for on-demand scanning.

From reading previous threads in the forums, I realize that you use the logs generated by various scan programs to perform a diagnosis. However, I thought a list of observed symptoms might be useful. They occur sometime soon following a re-boot, once a browser is launched. They include the following, in no particular order:
- Clicking on a link in a search result list (Google, Yahoo, Bing) results in redirection to an un-wanted site or sites (a single click may open more than one new window or tab).
- Spontaneous generation, without user action, of a new browser window or windows that load an un-wanted site.
- The unwanted sites display either a list of links (may or may not have content related to the original, valid search result), or a bogus 'you are a winner' notification, or bogus virus / malware / registry corruption notification with an offer to click through to a scan / cleanup site.
- Once the malware has kicked in, various elements of the desktop and windows change appearance: the background color and fonts on the taskbar, the appearance of the start button (graphic windows logo disappears, replaced by plain text), the window title bar minimize, maximize / restore, and close buttons change from blue, blue and red respectively to a plain text image, etc.
- Internet Explorer tabbed browsing display is disabled. The tabs are still active and can be accessed using QuickTabs(Ctrl-Q).
- Certain websites are simply blocked -- notably Windows Update. Attempting to access blocked sites delivers an error message that varies with the browser: in IE8, there's a 'No Internet Connection' message (despite the fact that other tabs can still access unblocked sites); Safari reports the site as blocked, with an un-enumerated error code.
- Symptoms can be delayed, but not entirely avoided, by copying and pasting link URLs rather than clicking on them.

An MBAM scan performed after symptoms started turned up a list of problems, which were successfully disinfected (a subsequent scan ran clean), but the hijack problems persist.

F-Secure AV periodically reports that its real-time scanning has blocked access to the Packed.Win32.Krap.hc virus, at path C:\System Volume Information\_restore{610895F6-F171-441A-A5A9-39C260F28E86}\RP122. However, the offered disinfection action fails (message: 'The object could not be disinfected'). I will attach the F-Secure log for reference.

I have followed the 'Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help' as
follows:
1. Backup - not applicable, as this machine is used primarily for internet access. There are no significant
documents, photos, bookmarks, etc. stored on this machine.
2. 'It May Not Be Malware' evaluation -- I think we're pretty clear on this one.
3. Create a free account - Done.
4. Enable topic reply notification by default. -- Done
5. Enable a firewall -- Windows Firewall enabled. The observation about a lack of an outbound firewall is noted. F-Secure, unfortunately, does not provide a firewall function -- so we're stuck with Windows' for the moment.
6. Disable your CD Emulation Software -- Defogger downloaded and installed, waiting for your instructions.
7. Download and Run DDS which will create a log of programs running on your computer -- DDS downloaded and installed, but <sigh> I am sorry to report that I cannot get it to run to completion. The black window and information text appears, then the program displays a series of colons (:::::: ) as it runs, and I can hear disc access occuring for about three minutes. At that point the machine locks up and must be rebooted to recover. The Notepad windows do not appear. As this seems to be a critical component of your initial evaluation of my problem, I am anxious to get this working.
8. Create a GMER Log (32-bit versions of Windows only) - GMER downloaded and installed, ran successfully, ark.txt file attached.
9. Create a new malware removal topic and post the DDS logs and the GMER log -- Here we go!
10. What to expect now that you have created your topic - patiently waiting your reply.

As I said above, this one's beyond me. But I am pretty good at making observations, and following instructions, so hopefully we can find a solution together.

Happy Bleeping New Year!

- Mark

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Hola Sr Gringo and thanks again for your help. I understand that the Malware Response Team receives many requests and I apppreciate your willingness to spend time on my problem. I hope that our work together will be brief and successful.

I have attempted to execute your instructions with the following results:
1. DeFogger: downloaded successfully, ran to 'Finish!', then had to close the Enable / Disable window manually. There was no reboot request, so I assume my machine was not running CD emulation software.
2. DDS: First, I disabled the real-time and scheduled scanning options in F-Secure. I don't know of any other script-blocking software on the machine -- please alert me if there's some built-in WindowsXP protection that must also be disabled.
DDS.scr file dowloaded successfully. As described in my original post, the black DOS window and information text appears. Then, as it runs, the program displays a progress indicator, a series of colons (:::::: ), and I can hear disc access occuring for about three minutes. At that point the machine locks up and must be rebooted to recover. The Notepad windows do not appear.
I had identical results with the DDS.pif file and the DDS.com file.
Finally, I decided to boot into Safe Mode then run DDS.scr, with the same results.
Please advise how I can run DDS successfully to get those logs.
3. Rootkit Unhooker: downloaded successfully. Configured Report options per instructions. Here is the report:

0xB9DFB000 WARNING: suspicious driver modification [atapi.sys::0x8A7F339B]

I have noticed that F-Secure, our everyday anti-virus program, is sometimes detecting virus / malware items when the browser redirects occur. The latest was identified as 'Hoax.HTML.FakeAntivirus.a', found in file C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\4PHR9297\jquery-init[1].js. F-Secure attempts to disinfect the affected file, but fails, and re-names it instead.

Happy Bleeping New Year!

Hello and Happy new year to you also

Lets see if we can get this to run

Download and run OTL

Download OTL by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTListIt.txt <-- Will be opened and the that I need posted back here
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized - save this one on your desktop in case I ask for it later
  • Please post the contents of OTListIt.txt in your next reply.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

G:

Not able to run Combofix successfully to produce a log file.

I downloaded it successfully from the bleeping site. Disabled F-Secure's real-time and scheduled scans, as well as automatic updates. Closed all other programs.

Combofix launches and displays the expected DOS window with text indicating that it is scanning, but disc access stops after about 10-12 minutes. Attempting to close the DOS window, or launch another task, or click the start button, causes the machine to lock up, requiring a reboot.

I've made four attempts, all with the same result. One time, I let the machine sit for almost an hour after disc access stopped, just to allow sufficient time for completion.

I can give you some more details of the events during Combofix scan if you wish. I have not, however, seen the report.

The machine still shows symptoms of the browser hijack.

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

I ran TDSSKiller twice. The first run detected a single 'malicious object' (= your phrase, 'infected file'?), with default action Cure. I continued, and it ran to end with a reboot required.

The contents of the log file, TDSSKiller.2.4.12.0_10.01.2011_09.05.11_log, is pasted below. I will paste the log from the later run in a separate post.

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

G:

I have made two attempts to run ComboFix (CF) in Safe Mode, both unsuccessful, both ending in the machine
locking up without producing the desired log file. Here is a narrative of the details:

1st Attempt:
- Shut down and wait 30 sec.
- Boot into Safe Mode; noted no internet connection or F-Secure Anti-Virus (FSAV) icon in the system tray, so I
assumed the machine was in the desired state.
- Launched CF; CF reported that FSAV real-time scanning was running & recommended disabling it before
continuing.
- Attempted to launch FSAV GUI from Start Menu; FSAV task window did not appear. CF message window stated
that it would run with FSAV real-time scanning active, but warned against undesirable results.
- Shut down machine to cancel CF

- Boot machine in normal mode.
- Launch FSAV GUI; disable real-time scan, scheduled scan, and automatic updates.
- Shut down and wait 30 sec.

- Boot into Safe Mode
- Launch CF
- Observe DOS '.' window with 'preparing to run' message
- Observe Regstry Backup
- Observe DOS 'AutoScan' window with 'should take 10 minutes ...' message
- Observed disc access light flickering and disc access sounds
- after 5 minutes, observed disc light on steady and no further disc access sounds. No stage progress
messages observed
- after 10 more minutes, noted clock stalled. No stage progress messages observed
- after 55 more minutes, no stage progress messages observed. Decided to abort. Attempted to close DOS
window. Machine locked up.
- Powered down machine, waited 30 seconds.

2nd Attempt:
- Boot into Safe Mode
- Launch CF
- Observe DOS '.' window with 'preparing to run' message
- Observe Regstry Backup
- Observe DOS 'AutoScan' window with 'should take 10 minutes ...' message
- Observed disc access light flickering and disc access sounds
- after 2 minutes, observed disc light on steady and no further disc access sounds. No stage progress
messages observed
- 1 more minute, noted clock stalled. No stage progress messages observed.
- after 40 more minutes, no stage progress messages observed. Decided to abort. Attempted to close DOS
window. Machine locked up.
- Powered down machine.

If further CF attempts are to be made, please advise as to what is a *reasonable* amount of time to wait after
the AutoScan window opens, before the stage progress messages start appearing. I don't want to be impatient,
but I would like to be able to recognize an unsuccessful attempt and abort so we can get to the next strategy

Regards, Mark

Clear your Java Cache

  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • Log From MBAM
  • report from Hijackthis
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

In summary, no problems completing above steps.
Machine shows no redirect symptoms in current session BUT, please note, I am limiting its use to tasks related to our disinfection efforts, and disconnecting from wireless router at other times. Please let me know if / when I should put it back in general use to test.

Greetings

use it normaly and let me know how things are running

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):
