I stupidly clicked on combofix before I needed to, and without guidance, to remove a rootkit or the likes. I am up and running now, but I noticed something strange on my hardrive. A new folder called combofix. The ComboFix folder has the same icon as "My Computer" and when I click on it, I am routed to My Computer showing all the drives, but the address bar says C:\ComboFix. Is this going to affect anything, other than my worrisome mind?

What you describe is a working folder for ComboFix which was created when there was a failed or interrupted run of ComboFix.

Download a fresh copy of ComboFix and save it to your Desktop.

Click Posted Image > Run... and type in the run dialog box: ComboFix /Uninstall
  • Press OK.
-- Vista/Windows 7 users refer to these instructions: How to Enable Run Command in Windows 7 or Vista
  • If you encounter any problems using the switch from the Run dialog box, just rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe, then double-click on it to remove.
  • This will delete ComboFix's related folders/files, reset the clock settings, hide file extensions/system files, clear the System Restore cache and create a new Restore point.

Afterwards, please do NOT run ComboFix again unless asked to by a member of the Malware Removal Team.

I've had the same Problem as J.R. but your (quietman7) method didn't work for me. I installed combofix into my desktop

and I typed in "ComboFix/Uninstall" in run and I got a pop up message saying: "Windows cannot find ComboFixUninstall.' Make sure you

typed the name correctly and then try again."

You know what the weird thing is? After I install it on my desktop, I cant find ComboFix in my "add or remove programs" in control panel or anywhere

else on my computer besides the initial location (the problem) and the desktop. After I delete the desktop one, I cannot do anything.

Can I just delete the ComboFix with the "my computer" icon? Will it cause me any problems? =(

You have replied to a topic which is almost four years old.

ComboFix does not uninstall the way you are accustomed to via Programs and Features (or Add/Remove Programs). The /Uninstall command is actually a switch created by the developer to remove his tool. The correct way to uninstall ComboFix, all of its related folders, files and logs is to make sure it is still on the Desktop (<-Important!!!) and follow these instructions...which BTW is the official method, not mine.

After that, you can remove the ComboFix.exe program from your Desktop by right-clicking on it and choosing delete.

Hi quietman7

I followed the above instructions, combofix appeared to uninstall properly (uninstall asked me to suspend Kasperky shields which I did) howevever I still have combofix folder in my windows explorer . Within my c drive folder I have a combofix folder which appears to be a root folder with my c and d drive contained within..

Unless the DelFix post by quietman7 has solved your problem (you posted thank you) the code is not correct

"ComboFix/Uninstall" should read ComboFix /Uninstall, with a space between x and / .

Very inportant, not as you have writtten it.

May also help others with this problem, even 4 years from now ............

Again you make me annoy quietman7 by dragging up old topics and I reply to them -

sabaithaime replied in the other topic that DelFix worked.

Since both topics are old, to avoid confusion, they have been closed.

Anyone with similar issues should start a new topic.
