I followed your excellent preparation guide to the letter, running and re-running scans. I use Firefox. Seemingly randomly, an IE window will open with an advertisement popup. They are usually for professional sites: 888.com, mymobiclub.com. They are not pornographic. Any hints or help would be much appreciated.

I use Firefox 1.0.7 - should I upgrade to 1.5?

Hi and  to BleepingComputer!

My name is David Posted Image

Hmm...i have a suspicion that this will fix it:

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

David

With IE closed, run Hijack This again.
Put a checkmark on these entries and hit "fix checked":

ok!

Let's make sure everything is gone:

:flowers: Click Here to do a Panda online scan
  • If it asks you install active x controls click Yes
  • If a box comes up telling you to install the program also click Yes
  • Make sure you tick Disinfect automatically under Scan Options
  • Complete the scan and post the log that you can save afterwards in the same way you did the HJT log.
  • It is normal for it to take a reasonable time to complete

It came up with this:

Incident Status Location

Adware:Adware/PurityScan Not desinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\m?iexec.exe

I didn't see any scan options, but I note the free version only removes viruses and not other things i.e. adware...

Should I just delete this file?
