Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Thanks for replying. I had given up on my netbook, since I use it mainly to surf the web. My problem is that when using a web browser, I get redirected to random sites. Nothing Xrated or malicious yet. Just extremely frustrating. I have found that if I click the back button (once or often multiple times) to go back to the browser page, AND I click on the SAME link, it won't redirect me again. Who has time or patience for that!?
I've tried scanning McAfee, Spybot, Malwarebytes and a couple others I can't even remember. This problem has been bothering me for months. I had added the Hijackthis log. I'll scan that again. The DDS and GMER logs, I've never done. I was having trouble with the DDS. I will try again and post a follow up. In the meantime, if you can help me out with what I have provided, I would be greatly appreciative. Like I said, I had given up. Looks like your my last hope.
Like I mentioned, here is today's HijackThis log:

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I will be takeing over at this point and be with you till we finish

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Shannon2012 asked for a set of DDS reports and that is a great place to start so please do the following

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Scan With RKUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

"just click on Cancel, then Accept".

information and logs:

  • In your next post I need the following

  • .logs from DDS
  • log from RKUnHooker
  • let me know of any problems you may have had

I've performed the steps you asked and attached the DDS logs
The rkunhooker report is pasted below.
Hopefully you can help me get my browser working as it should.
Also, if you know & can tell me how this could have happened in the 1st place....so I can prevent this from happening again, I would be thankful.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I downloaded combofix to my desktop.
I'm unable to run it. I have disabled everything (antivirus/spyware).
I have Mcafee total protection, so I can't 'disable'...but I've tried unchecking it in task manager.
Any suggestions? Unless there is something I've missed....I've tried everything I know.

I feel like we're so close to a resolution....I'm so frustrated.

last night I downloaded the combofix but renamed it to my desktop (now I have two) and ran the newly named version. It began to work. However, it kept freezing up. I may be crazy but whatever is infecting my book seems to be fighting back. What started out as an annoying browser issue has now grown. I can't shut down my computer, it freezes at the shut down screen. It takes over 5 minutes to get back to my desktop after I manually shut down. I think I may have triggered the 'self destruct' button! :\
I will run the TDSSkiller now...just wanted to let you know...

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

Okay, I've tried and tried to boot up in safe mode. I am first prompted for my operating system: microsoft windows XP or recovery console. I select xp then press the F8 key. It prompts for the operating system again, then I press F8 again. Then it looks like it is about to start but it stops on this line:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

It won't move past this line. I don't know what else to try. I even tried safe mode w/networking. same thing.
