Hi,

I have a 2007 Dell 530 Desktop running Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2. It has a Intel Core2 Duo CPU E6550 @2.33GHz processor and 4GB of RAM.

The problem first occurred about a week ago when I saw a program on my desktop that I did not install called "Defragmenter". Soon after, when I would use the Firefox search engine drop down (upper right of screen), select Google, enter my search term and hit enter, the page of links would load like normal. However, about half of the links would route to a shopping sites rather than where the link was supposed to go. When I tried this exact same search using IE 8's search engine drop down and selecting Google, the links worked properly.

I used Revo Uninstaller to get rid of Defragmenter. I also went back a couple of weeks using Windows Vista retore point. Everything seemed fine at that point except when I went back to Windows Update to redownload the security patches that were removed by “going back in time”, I kept getting errors that the updates could not be downloaded. I also wasn't able to update Microsoft Security Essentials.

I then downloaded several free adware/malware removal programs--i.e. Spybot Search and Destroy, Malware Bytes - Anti-Malware, HiJack This and SUPERAnti-Malware. After running each of these plus Microsoft's own Malicious Software Removal Tool in both Normal and Safe Modes, several items were found. But just like your malware documentation stated, the problems would come right back. At first, I thought it was directly tied to the Firefox search engine drop down because when I typed in google.com in the Firefox address bar and then did my google search, the links worked properly.

Unfortunately, a few days later, I'm started seeing new tabs open automatically in both IE and Firefox that went to unfamiliar shoping sites. Some pages would even tell me there were security issues on my computer. One of the auto-open tabs went to this site: www.pcspeedmaximizer.s3.amazonawx.com/index.html. I also noticed that the search engine "BigSeekPro" was added to both IE and Firefox's search engine drop down and was made to be the default.

Since I first noticed this, sometimes it takes several tries followed by using Task Manager to kill the app instances, or a CCleaner run or even a reboot to get some apps to load--mostly only affects Firefox. When trying to get Firefox to load, sometimes I would get the Windows memory blue screen of death flash onto the screen followed by a forced reboot.

When my computer reboots or turns on now, right after the desktop loads, I see an Ipconfig black DOS box appear for a second or two. I have never seen this before.

Finally, it took me about 10 tries to get the gmer scan to run without crashing. I'm not sure if this is related.

Help!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

hi

Please do the following:

Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.
Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt for further review.

I tried to run Combofix after disabling all anti-virus/malware programs but I keep getting the Windows blue memory dump screen followed by an automatic reboot. I even tried running Combofix in safe mode. Any suggestions?

By the way, I had the same problem with the GMER scan but eventually after several tries I got it to work.

Hi

Delete the copy of ComboFix that you have on your desktop and download a fresh copy, rename it to iexplore before saving it to your desktop, then try running it again.

if it still wont run, try running it in safe mode

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY repeatedly,
  • this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
  • go into your usual account

Hi,

Wow, that was a chore!

It took me about 12 tries to get ComboFix to even run. On the first two successful starts, I would get as far as ComboFix finding a rootkit and the system needed to be rebooted. At the start of the reboot, I would get that Windows blue memory dump screen again so I had to restart the process all over again.

Finally on the third successful start I was able to get through to the end and I made sure to select Safemode after each of the two required reboots.

Attached is the report you requested.

Hi,

Can you please advise if you knowingly installed/uninstalled a keylogger program by the name of System Surveillance Pro?

Please do the following:

Please download TDSSKiller.zip
  • Extract it to your desktop
  • Double click TDSSKiller.exe
  • Press Start Scan
    • Only if Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected
    • Then click Continue > Reboot now
  • Copy and paste the log in your next reply
    • A copy of the log will be saved automatically to the root of the drive (typically C:\)

NEXT
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic369661.html

Collect::
c:\programdata\QunMknIyHJtwbe.dll
c:\programdata\LBSYdYrDlalNvk.exe

File::
c:\windows\system32\lsp9A9A.tmp
c:\users\Family\AppData\Local\Upupexominopafe.bin
c:\programdata\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\Launch Whitesmoke Translator.lnk
c:\windows\pss\Launch Whitesmoke Translator.lnk.CommonStartup

RenV::
c:\windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\AdobeUpdate .exe

Registry::
[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"LBSYdYrDlalNvk.exe"=-
[-HKLM\~\startupfolder\C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\Launch Whitesmoke Translator.lnk]

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As... Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save ...

Posted Image

  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

I may have installed/uninstalled that program but it had to be at least a year ago.

My Notes/Observations
ComboFix attempted to upload the type of malware it found on my computer but was unable to. After the scan was complete, I manually uploaded the file located here: C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\[4]-Submit_2011-01-06_20.06.16.zip

I do want to report that right after the two scans completed, Windows was able to finally download and install the latest updates--this is something I haven't been able to do since I started having the redirects. I'm now also able to ALT-TAB between apps again and so far after about 20 minutes of browser use, I'm not getting the redirects nor are tabs automatically opening.

Hi

Please do the following:

  • Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware Program
  • Click the Update Tab and search for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 23 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says JDK 6 Update 23 (JDK or JRE)
  • Click the Download JRE button to the right
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6u23 with JavaFX 1 License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java™ 6) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u23-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Hi

Just some housekeeping to do now,

please do the following:

You can delete the TDSSKiller, DDS and GMER logs and programs from your desktop.

NEXT

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix

  • Make sure your security programs are totally disabled.
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now copy/paste Combofix /uninstall into the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the ..X and the /U, it needs to be there.

If there are any logs/tools remaining on your desktop > right click and delete them.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

  • It is good security practice to change your passwords to all your online accounts on a fairly regular basis, this is especially true after an infection. Refer to this Microsoft article
Strong passwords: How to create and use them
Then consider a password keeper, to keep all your passwords safe.

  • Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    • Click on the Security tab
    • Click Reset all zones to default level
    • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
    • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
    • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Download TFC to your desktop
    • Close any open windows.
    • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
    • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
    • Click the Start button to begin the process.
    • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
    • The program should not take long to finish it's job
    • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
    • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
It's normal after running TFC cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

  • WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
    • Green to go
    • Yellow for caution
    • Red to stop
WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and IE

  • Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.

  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.

  • In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at this well written article:
PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?.

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

Should you wish to contribute to my ongoing fight against malware, donations are being accepted >>Here<<

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Please respond one last time so we can consider the thread resolved and close it, thank-you.

CatByte,

I've taken the steps you outlined in your latest post.

Thank you so much for helping me resolve this issue. I've been computing for years and this is the first time I haven't been able to resolve a problem like this on my own. You saved me from having to waste an entire weekend reinstalling Windows and all my apps. Thanks again. I really appreciate it.

Look for a donation from me.
