Ok, I'm relatively new here. I've tried to follow the rules, but I apparently keep posting in the wrong areas. The following are my logs from DDS and Combofix (I know I wasn't supposed to run combofix on my own, and I ran it before I ran DDS). I also ran hijack this, that log is at the bottom. GMER cannot be run on my machine as I am running Window7 64bit. I've tried a lot of things before resorting to bleeping computer, too numerous to list at this point. I would consider myself an above average user, and I am generally able to get rid of viruses on my own. This is different, I have an idea about whats going on, but realize it's beyond my current level of expertise. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

information and logs:

  • In your next post I need the following

  • .logs from DDS
  • let me know of any problems you may have had

Ok. There are no CD emulators installed on this computer, but I ran DeFogger anyway for good measure. Here are the most recent Logs from DDS. I know the program itself says not to post the "attach.txt" log, but I read another forum where the moderator specifically said he does not open .zip files. So, it is posted as per your instruction. I am able to log in most nights to check on the progress and perform any actions you see fit. I'm attempting to fix this computer (with your help of course) while at work, so with a 2 day weekend, the longest it would ever take me to reply is 3 days. I understand there are a lot of people out there that need assistance; I will be patient :) Thank you.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

OK. I ran combo fix and initially it told me that Symantec Endpoint was still running though i had disabled it. There was no option to cancel to try to disable it again, so I continued. Everything looked normal. Combofix performed it's scan and restarted. After the restart, the Combofix screen reappeared with a message not to run any programs until it was done. Then two error messages popped up.

"PEV.cfxxe has stopped working" and
"Please re-install the Belkin software from the setup CD C:/programfiles(x86)/Belkin/Routersetup and Monitor Setup.exe Unavailable."

Combofix failed to produce a log. I attempted to run combofix again and it did not start properly. I lost control of the system and had to reboot. Everything seems to be functioning normally at the moment. I am still receiveing redirects from yahoo while using firefox.

Also, since yesterday the default homepage has changed to http://search.conduit.com/?ctid=CT2866295&SearchSource=13 and the search bar (next to the address bar) in firefox was set to search conduit.com.

One more thing. Since the first time I ran Combofix (first log posted above) Symantec's Auto scan stalls at some point and will not finish. I must manually end the process to stop the scan. This happened twice. Then I manually stopped the scan three days in a row before it stalled and that worked just fine. When I view the scan logs from within the program, it shows that the two stalled scans are still running.

Please note that this computer is used by the general public and was never initially setup to be a public access computer.

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

OK. I booted in safe mode and ran ComboFix with the same results. PEV.cfxxe stopped working and no log was produced. I'm positive this has to do with Symantec. The scans are active as far as this system is concerned, though there are no actual scans running. So, I feel we either need to first find a way to repair symantec (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\lmhosts was deleted the first time I ran combofix) or uninstall it for the moment. However, this will be my last reply for the night as I have other duties to attend to. Thank you for the time you're putting in to this.

Oh, I did change the home page in FireFox back to what it should be and removed "elf 1.15" from the search bar list... I didn't think this would hurt the fix process, and it might prevent further damage for the moment.

I am still being redirected. I'm also still getting random pop-ups (a symptom I may have forgotten to mention in this posting). For instance, when I clicked on this text box to type this message a pop up occurred that directed me to

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click on Minimal Output at the top
  • Download the following file scan.txt to your Desktop. Click here to download it. You may need to right click on it and select "Save"
  • Double click inside the Custom Scan box at the bottom
  • A window will appear saying "Click Ok to load a custom scan from a file or Cancel to cancel"
  • Click the Ok button and navigate to the file scan.txt which we just saved to your desktop
  • Select scan.txt and click Open. Writing will now appear under the Custom Scan box
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the OTL.Txt into this topic and please attach the Extras.Txt.

OK, here it is. I see that the directions say to attach the extras.txt. Is that what you wanted, or did you want me to also copy and paste that log? By the way, your link directed me to Geeks to Go and there was no file to download. I searched for scan.txt and used the file in the first search result.
