Windows failing to initialize

After the "Starting Windows" loading sequence finishes, my Dell XPS running Windows 7 boots to a blank, black screen displaying nothing but a normal Windows cursor. I can move the cursor around the screen but can't select anything, as nothing to select is displayed.

first impression for me is a faulty driver.
try safe mode to uninstall video driver and see what will happen.
