I am using an emachine with WXP Home edition, sp3.

I can play CD's, listen to Internet audio, etc. There are sounds when my computer goes idle and I bring it up with my password. There are no sounds on startup or shut-down.

There used to be sounds when I received emails, but there are none now. The printer used to make a sound on initiating and shutting down, but those sounds are not there. The sound asterisks in Sound Control are properly checked. Why don't I have sounds?

A belated reply. If the sounds are checked in the Sounds/Program events, have you checked that the actual wav files exist and play as they should. They are in Windows/Media.

I had a problem on one PC where I could not stop a sound no matter what, so I made a silent wav, renamed it with the offender's name and replaced the offender. Still sounds but 0 volume!
