Hi,
On 12/2/10 my PC was mugged. Warnings by Scotty (Winpatrol) alerted me to possible changes to rundll32 among others.
Scanned with Ad Aware, found & fixed a few things.
Decided to update my windows security, but discovered I couldn't access it. After the update starting page, it would
go to "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided
below might help you solve the problem....With error code: Error number: 0x80072EFF

Never found the meaning of that specific error code.

Had previously used Malwarebytes so I downloaded the latest version of that which warned me of possible tdl3 rootkit infection, then re-booted and finished the scan.

Operation improved for a bit, but still can't access windows update. Usually I can't even access the page anymore.

a) If I can access the update page (checking your system for the latest version of windows updating software, it switches to
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view.
The options provided below might help you solve the problem." & displays an 0x80072EFF error.
B) Sometimes re-directed to Google.
c) Usually I get (what i think is a fake) "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" with the "Diagnose Connection Problem" button. There is no connection problem

Other symptoms:
1) IE8 launches successfully less than 50% of the time.
2) IE Occasionally spontaneously re-directs to other pages
3) Multiple instances of IE open even when only a single window is displayed.
4) After a few minutes changes begin to my profile i.e.
a) Windows wireless connection control is replaced by Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG driver.
i) Manually reverting to windows wireless control results in limited wireless access requiring a re-boot.
B) the font on my task bar changes.
c) MS firewall & Anti-virus are turned off and cannot be re-started. Message is that ICS will not start.
d) My audio control says it is uninstalled
5) I sometimes observe networking when none is active (Win Task Mgr) greater than merely keeping a wireless heartbeat going.

Upon re-boot original profile is run, firewall is enabled, audio controls work. IE continues to behave randomly.

System:
Vaio laptop with Intel dual core T7400 (64b) running XP SP3 & IE8.
Wireless link to router.

Lavasoft's AdAware, WinPatrol are running.

Thanks in advance for your help.

PS. When I tried to post this from infected computer, I immediately got "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" with the "Diagnose Connection Problem" so I've posted this from a clean CAD system.

PC has slowed to a crawl....

Malware causes a couple of instantiations of svchost.exe to run amok slowly increasing in memory usage until PC stops running.
Manually killing continually growing version periodically is temp fix.

Now efforts are made to add malware addresses to HOSTS file. Scotty alerts me.

Hi Gringo,

Nice to meet you ya.

I'm attaching DDS "Attach.txt", and pasting in DDS.txt & RKUnhooker Report.txt per your request.
Only anomaly has been multiple attempts to post resulting in "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" pages which dump my posts.

Finally had to switch to another PC to upload this, sigh.....

Thanks in advance for your help - be glad to rid my PC of this invasion.

Regards,

bob

Hello

Nice to meet you to sir

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo
I Close My Topics If You Have Not Replied In 5 Days If You Will Be Longer Please Let Me Know

Hi Gringo,

I turned off Adaware AV (and verified it) yet ComboFixe continued to report it was still active.
Told me it would 'run at my own risk'.

I disabled my network (wireless connection) after disabling all my protection then ran Combofix.

Rootkit TDL3 was detected.

System rebooted.

System audio still stuttered after 1st re-boot (the virus/malware) would previously disable my audio devices
after a few minutes following any re-boot.

Without wireless, system feels nominal.
Re-enabled wireless, it connected normally (and quickly).

Audio still stutters.

I found the following changes made to my HOSTS file after disabling Scotty to run ComboFix. Pernicious devils!
127.0.0.1 www.8minutedating.com
127.0.0.1 whysohardx.com
127.0.0.1 protectyourpc-11.com
127.0.0.1 checkserverstatux.com
127.0.0.1 xinmin.cn
127.0.0.1 xy95.cn
127.0.0.1 koralda.com
127.0.0.1 weirden.com
127.0.0.1 nanocloudcontroller.com

After a few minutes connected to the web, an svchost.exe grew out of control sucking up memory resources (>250kB) till manually killed.
An attempt was made to alter my profile (the fonts in the active task bar at the bottom changed).

Launching IE still results in 2x iexplore.exe under the Win Task Mgr.

There are still files that had appeared right after the initial attack located at:
c:\windows\system32\config
system.bak
software.bak
SECURITY.bak
SAM.bak
and their associated *.tmp.LOG files (0 KB)
New versions of these exist having been created today, however Scotty reports that they had not previously existed before 12/2/10 (original attack).

End result - although it felt much improved initially, it still seems to be under attack.

Thank you & happy new year.

bob

PS Any attempt to "USE FULL EDITOR" or "POST" a response results in "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".
Sigh. This is tenacious.
Switched to a clean PC to post this.

Hi Gringo,

Happy New Year!

It found the tdl4 rootkit. Nasty little bug!!

In general it seems to be getting healthier, audio still stutters as though the CPU is too busy to properly service it.

Woohoo! I can get to the Windows Update page for the first time in a month.
IDed 14 critical updates for the system, but I will not install updates until you OK it.

Here's the post

Thanks,

bob

Hello

You can install the updates now.

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..
Clear your Java Cache

  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • Log From MBAM
  • report from Hijackthis
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi Gringo,

MS updates & install took a long while for 2 months of updates.
Had to repair Outlook & Word, but they're running now.

TFC ran with no problem. MBAM ran clean (log below). Hijackthis ran fine (log below).

Audio continues to stutter. iexplore continues to open 2 processes (when viewed with Win Task Mgr) when launched.
Win Task Mgr, Process Tab, will show large (40 or 50%) usage at the bottom, but within the process tab sorted on CPU shows single digit usage. Correlation between the two is often far apart.

It is much better than it has been for the last month, but not quite back to normal per examples above.

Thanks,

bob

Greetings

iexplore continues to open 2 processes (when viewed with Win Task Mgr) when launched.
This is normal

will show large (40 or 50%) usage at the bottom, but within the process tab sorted on CPU shows single digit usage
can you see what is using all the CPU cycles?

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxtray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxhkcmd] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxpers] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EOUApp] "C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EOUWiz.exe"

      O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

NOTE**You can research each of those lines >here< and see if you want to keep them or not
just copy the name between the brakets and paste into the search space
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelliPoint]

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan - Vista and win 7 right click on IE shortcut and run as admin

Go Eset web page to run an online scannner from ESET.

  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • click on the ESET Online Scanner button
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
    • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options
Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Hi Gringo,

The ESET file is attached below with 4 unremovable trojans on board (> 5 hour scan)

A couple of comments re current performance:
1) Audio
MS wav files at start of Windows stutter. Streamed a/v files (youtube, etal) stutter.

2) Iexplore processes
with IE7 on another computer I only see a single iexplore.exe when i launch IE. Do you mean that 2 separate processes is normal for IE8?

3) CPU cycles
No, nothing shows up as to what's using all the cycles under the processes page. > 95% System Idle Process, but there is definitely a background task(s) running at the beginning for 10 or more minutes consuming upwards to 50% of CPU usage. The Performance tab agrees with the CPU usage icon on the task bar and with the text at the bottom of the process tab.

4) winuault.exe
seems to run although tiny cpu cycles associated with it, huge memory resources at the beginning (>150K)

5) On a 2nd CAD PC system with similar set-up, OS, memory, etc - initial CPU usage tracks with AAWService.exe (adaware) usage at 30 - 40%, but not on this system. AAWService claims only single digit CPU resources at startup.

Thanks for your help,

bob

Hello

lets try something.

I want you to uninstall Lavasoft Ad-Watch Live! Anti-Virus and see if things clear up - you can reinstall it back after the test

Hi Gringo,

Done.

Some improvement (~20% faster) on boot time.
Some improvement on length of time with CPU processes at between 30-50% (~30%)

1) Audio still has a problem.
MS wav files at start of Windows stutter. Streamed a/v files (youtube, et al.) stutter.
I understand that with soft decoders that excessive cpu usage with higher priorities will degrade playback.
However I waited for the cpu process number to drop down to single digit useage before trying to stream anything.
I even paused the app to allow 30 seconds of music to buffer up - no change.
Connection is still good at 4.2Mbps down, 2.1Mbps up wirelessly to modem using DSLReports

2) Iexplore processes
with IE7 on another computer I only see a single iexplore.exe when i launch IE. Do you mean that 2 separate processes is normal for IE8?

3) CPU cycles
No, nothing shows up as to what's using all the cycles under the processes page. > 95% System Idle Process, but there is definitely a background task(s) running at the beginning for 5 or 6 minutes consuming upwards to 50% of CPU usage. The Performance tab agrees with the CPU usage icon on the task bar and with the text at the bottom of the process tab.

4) winuault.exe
seems to run although tiny cpu cycles associated with it, huge memory resources at the beginning (>150K)

5) There are still 10 svchost.exe processes running after boot (and before I launch anything).

6) Current process count is down to 58 from 70 following disabling the unnecessary apps at boot time.

Thanks,

bob

- I don't know what is going on here

2) Iexplore processes

- yes this is normal for IE 8

3) CPU cycles

- this is windows update - I have mine set to notify maybe this will help

5) There are still 10 svchost.exe processes running after boot (and before I launch anything). this is normal and can have upwards of 20

6) Current process count is down to 58 from 70 following disabling the unnecessary apps at boot time. this may be a little high but not exessive

you can use process explorer to find out what is using all your resources
