My brother went out and got his laptop hit with a nasty infection. I get BSoDs on startup in the normal mode, and 1/2 the time on startup in safe mode. I have scanned this computer with MalwareBytes, and the problem still persists. I will post a log below.

UPDATE: I am also getting redirected when using my browser search in Safe Mode with Networking. I am getting redirected to something like "crozybannir"

Hi! I am also infected like this. crozybannir.com terrible redirect. I have looked online and found no information about this website. Definately has to be a rootkit.

I am looking at running combofix.exe and see if it finds this.

Any one of the experts on here know what this website is?

I found this: Who is: crozybannir

Hey Master5270,

I finished running combofix on the infected machine and it found:
- iwingameshookie.dll which from what I read is hideware installed with free online games.
- infected copy of RMActivate_ssp.exe which was replaced with a clean file
- Bootkit TDL4 was found and disinfected.

Other notes:

whilst running combofix it indicated that this was an infection of the Master boot record.

Fingers crossed this is completely gone now...

Let me know how you go.

Also i know alot of top level malware experts dont want you to run Combofix but if your important data is backed up then if you do end up with a stuffed installation its not such a big deal. You reload your system as you probably would have to if this infection cant be deleted.

Thanks.

Just had a thought,

prior to running combfix I added that stupid crozybannir.com to my blocked websites in the host file.

You could try that and see if you can run combofix then?

@ Master5270

The topic may have been overlooked because there have been replies made to it: Helpers usually look for topics with zero replies when searching for a topic to assist with.

I will PM boopme and ask that he look at your topic, so please sit tight for awhile longer.

In the meantime, please do NOT attempt to run ComboFix: Please see the warning in blue at the top of the page "ComboFix is a tool that should only be run under the supervision of someone who has been trained in its use. Using it on your own can cause problems with your computer." The use of ComboFix at the BC forums is strictly limited to the Malware Removal Logs forum, and then only when asked to do so by a Malware Response Team member helping with that topic.

@ pcpow

I know you are a new member and keen to help: Before attempting to do so, you should make yourself familiar with the rules of the BC forums, and what is allowed and what is not allowed, and I suggest reading the following as a first step:
How do I get help? Who is helping me?

Please do not advocate the use of ComboFix to other members in the BC forums. If you choose to run it yourself, contrary to the advice offered at Bleeping Computer forums, that is up to you.

Hello, This is why No one should be using ConboFix alone. It is far from a Toy or a cureall to run on a whim.
We can fix this.

We need to try to post a DDS log in a new topic.
Please go here....
Preparation Guide ,do steps 6 - 9.

Create a DDS log and post it in the new topic explained in step 9,which is here Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs and not in this topic, thanks.
If Gmer won't run, skip it and move on.
Let me know if that went well.

I would make a new topic about logs, but I can't seeing to how I can't get DDS to work properly. and the computer that I'm working on is 64bit, so it won't run GMER either.

As I stated before, DDS isn't working properly for me, I get about halfway through the scan and then I BSoD with no specific error messages.

@pcpow as I am sure you will not make this error again, all is forgiven

Now Master.
Create the new topic here....
Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs and not in this topic, thanks.

Explain you had mistakenly run ComBoFix. You can put a link back to this topic so they can see your ttroubles.

Instead of DDS use OTL
  • 1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:

Hello,

Now that you have posted a log here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic369061.html you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a MRT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the MRT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the MRT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the MRT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another MRT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

Please be patient. It may take several days to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible. I advise checking your topic once a day for responses as the e-mail notification system is unreliable.

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. Good luck with your log.
