Hi folks, I'm new to the forum. I am trying to solve a problem. I have a new hp with win 7. I picked up the security shield malware. I have followed the instructions for removal. I used ikill to stop the pop ups, which worked great. I needed to load up via a flash drive, because the malware disabed my internet. I purchased the Malwarebytes programs and scanned to computer and removed one file.

The last part of fix was to delete the host file, which I did. I then tried the link included on this site for a host file download, but just got a note pad doc. So I looked at a couple of other sites and found another link which sent me to rapid something, I down loaded the file and saved it on the desk top as per directions. Now I don't known what to do with, when I try to run it, it is looking for a program to run in??

I am also concerned that MS security essentials didn't pick up the bug.

Hello and :welcome: to the BC forums.

The last part of fix was to delete the host file, which I did. I then tried the link included on this site for a host file download, but just got a note pad doc

The HOSTS file is a simple text file (without any .txt extension). It can be opened, changed and saved using Notepad. Please use the download from the suggested site and not any other. If you have deleted the original HOSTS file, then you should move the new HOSTS file that you have just downloaded to the same location that the old one was in, namely:

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc <<< folder

The removal guide for SecurityShield does not mention the HOSTS file at all.
Remove Security Shield or SecurityShield (Uninstall Guide)

The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM. Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.

Please post the log and let us know how the system is running now.

Inquistor,

Thanks for the reply, I might have mis understood the directions. Paragraph 18 states "We now need to delete the C:\win\sys32\dri\etc\HOST file. But now that I have removed it an up date will not be able to find it. I will play with and see. I think that I might have to manually type in the HOST name.

Inquistor, I looked at the link you attached and it is different from the one I read and printed from this site. There must be two sets of instructions. The address on the bottom of the page I printed reads
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-my-security-shield.

Inquistor, I was succsessful in doing a simple copy and paste of the hosts file.

As far as the instruction go I could not find the same directions that I printed out just yesterday. They had a paragraph 18,19,and 20.

Just had Malwarevytes say it has stopped a trojan comming from the same file that the security shield had attached it self.

I did not understand the request for posting logs?

Here's the "other" removal guide: Remove My Security Shield (Uninstall Guide)

One is called "My Security Shield" and the other is "Security Shield". Which infection did you have?
-----------------------

You said: "I did not understand the request for posting logs?"
I would like to see the contents of the log that MBAM created. Open the log so that you can see its contents ("viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM"). Then copy the contents (right-click > Select all, right-click > Copy) and paste (right-click > Paste) into the open text area when you are posting your next reply to this topic.

You said: "Just had Malwarebytes say it has stopped a trojan coming from the same file that the security shield had attached it self."
I do not understand what you might mean in the last part of that sentence, but it would seem that you are still infected and still having trouble. If so, please follow the instructions in the appropriate removal guide carefully again, ensuring that you do update MBAM database definitions (no need to re-download/re-install MBAM if you have the latest version, which is now 1.50) before scanning.

Please post the logs and let us know how the computer is running now.

It seems as though you might still have some malware on the system, namely:
C:\USERS\ROBERT BUCHANAN\APPDATA\LOCAL\90738.EXE Trojan.FakeAlert
Let's see if we can get rid of it.

Make sure you have one or more versions of RKill on the desktop ready to use: Download RKill.

Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If it will not start, go to Start > All Prgrams > SUPERAntiSpyware and click on Alternate Start.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Run RKill now.

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
If you have a problem downloading, installing or getting SAS to run, try downloading and using the SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner instead. Save the randomly named file (i.e. SAS_1710895.COM) to a usb drive or CD and transfer to the infected computer. Then double-click on it to launch and scan. The file is randomly named to help keep malware from blocking the scanner.

Please post the SAS log, and let us know how the computer is running now.
