How hot and how often does your laptop get this way?

I'd imagine off the top of my head if the sound has stopped completely, and you've done what you already have sound wise the card in the board has probably failed.

First place to check however is in the device manager, check to see that the card is in fact installed and properly, correct drivers etc.

Did you go into the Windows audio mixer to make sure sound is not muted? I don't know if the Logon wav is affected by the mixer setting. Presumably you don't have that sound on boot up either.
