For apparently no reason at all, my external hard drive and two USB drives have become write protected. There's no switch on the USB or external hard drive that I could have accidentally moved to perform this action. A scan with Microsoft Security Essentials shows no virus. Any advice or assistance would be much appreciated. Especially with the external hard drive.

Exact error message? What makes you think the externals are write-protected?

System manufacturer and model?

Do the drives appear properly in My Computer and Disk Management?

Exact error message: The disk is write-protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk.

System manufacturer and model: Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500GB WD5000H1U-00

The drive does appear properly in My Computer. I'm not familiar with Disk Management.

I've been looking on Disk Management for the past hour and don't see anything that looks like it could help me. What am I missing and/or overlooking?

Whenever I try to remove a file from the external hard drive or add a file to it a small windows opens up and it says:

The disk is write-protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk.
