I have a Compaq Presario X1000 running Windows XP Professional, and a few days ago the performance really started to suffer. I also started to get pop-ups for Wal-Mart gift cards, etc. The machine would eventually accumulate so many errors that it would grind to a halt, and I had to re-boot it the hard way. I had Ad-Aware 2008 installed, but that program would not run. I un-installed Ad-Aware, and the machine ran much better! Then I tried to download the latest version of Ad-Aware, and that's when the WhiteSmoke Translation Malware appeared. I tried all versions of rKill, but the log did not show any processes being killed. I also tried "system restore" from a restore point about 30 days ago, but that didn't help either. I would really like to get this machine cleaned up, so that I can pay my bills, and use the other software I have loaded! Please help!?

Also, I tried to run gmer multiple times, but the system would freeze. I did attach the last "type" message in the attached "ark_temp.txt" file I fabricated.

I was able to run MBAM to remove WhiteSmoke bits, but when I run GMER (in safe mode, renamed to dusterjmt), the following shows up in the message window before it locks:

Disk \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 sector 63: rootkit-like behavior;

Am I still infected?

Used TDSSKiller.exe to remove TDL3 Rootkit.

Confirmed system was clean using MBRCheck.exe and DDS.

Thanks, forum! I think I have my machine back!
