Hey everyone. Hope you can help!

My PC became infected with malware called System Tool about two days ago. I'm not tech savvy but I looked on the Internet and downloaded Malwarebytes. That seemed to clear it and PC started running normally again, but there was still a 'System Tool' icon in the programs list on my start menu. Thinking it was just a defunct shortcut I deleted this. Since then the PC is virtually unusable. It boots up but does not load the desktop. I just get a blue screen. I can recover the desktop by pressing Windows Key on keyboard, but the system freezes almost as soon as I try to do anything (e.g. open an application or click a desktop icon). I can access safe mode, where the desktop functions normally, but nothing works in normal mode.

The PC sound like it is in overdrive and when I run task manager in safe mode, 'system' is taking up 47% of CPU resources. Anyway that's all I can figure out! Logs below. Thanks!

Hello Ribsburg ,

Posted Image

SShhhh......don't tell anybody, but I got this MY system a few days ago. It was a driveby when I went to my daughter's MySpace! Nothing seems to stop it, and I could not open anything on my desktop.

Okay, so you say everything seems okay in Safe Mode, right? ComboFix will take this out, if you can get it to run.

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. You have too many AntiVirus programs anyway, and you MUST uninstall AVG so ComboFix will run.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

If you have trouble running it the first time, then rename ComboFix.exe to Ribsburg.exe and try again.

Thanks,
tea

Hi Tea

Thanks so much for your quick reply. It's driving me crazy!

Unfortunately AVG won't let me uninstall it while in safe mode.

Is there another tool I can use instead of ComboFix? Or do you have any ideas how I can remove AVG?

I've attached a Hijack This log if it's any help.

Best wishes

Ribs

Hey thanks Tea, that worked.

I've attached the log.

It's now starting up in diagnostic mode, but I won't turn on any more services/start ups until I have got rid of whatever is lurking.

Hey Ribs :)

How is it running now? Can you run MBAM now? Make sure it's updated and just run a quick scan. Post the report if it finds anything. :thumbup2:

Hello Tea

Thank you so much for all your help and expertise. I would have had no idea how to recover my machine without you!

I've run MBAM and nothing came back. Everything seems to be running fine now.

I've made a small contribution via PayPal. Your skills are worth much more I'm sure, but I'm not exactly rich!

Have a great Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Best wishes

Steve

Hello Steve,

I'm so glad to know it, and thank you so much. :inlove:

Uninstall ComboFix by doing the following :

Click Start>Run>Type in, or copy and paste ComboFix /Uninstall > click OK

I see you also have Avast!.....I would NOT reinstall AVG. One AntiVirus is better than two in this case. Less is definitely more. :thumbup2: Running 2, they will fight each other for resources and concentrate less on stopping the bad guys.

Take care,
tea
