The computer response time has been moving slower and slower, and when I tried to access help via internet ads kept popping up even with Google popups blocked. Also in task manager processes are a number of files I haven't seen before

Hi

Print these instructions because you are not able to access the Internet in SafeMode.

1. Download Ad-aware SE 1.05: here
Install it. When you get the last screen, with the "Finish" button and 3 options, uncheck those three items.
Open AdAware and click the "Check for updates now" link. Close AdAware. Don't use it yet.

2. Make sure you are set to show hidden files and folders:
A. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
B. Click the View tab.
C. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
D. Uncheck Hide extensions for known filetypes and Hide protected operating system files.
How to see hidden files in Windows

3. Go to Add/Remove programs and scroll down till you see an entry that contains the word WinTools and then uninstall it.
Follow all the prompts asking to uninstall and reboot when it asks.

4. Run HijackThis!, press Scan, close all other windows and browsers, and put a check mark next to all these (some of these entries could be missing if WinTools uninstall was successful):

When I got to the step "Delete these folders:
C:\Program files\Common files\WinTools\ <-- this folder
C:\Program files\Toolbar\" I ran into problems -- The "temp" folder within WinTools denied me access and so was unable to delete; and when I deleted the "toolbar" folder, it showed the folder was being deleted yet when delete was done the folder still appeared in the folder listing as a hidden folder??

I'm still unable to delete the c:\Program Files\Toolbar folder.

But there is a progress. TBPS.exe isn't active anymore.

Are you using XP Home or Pro ? Also go into my computer and right click on the C: drive and tell me if the filesystem is NTFS or FAT32 ?
