Hello,

So I'm trying to fix my grandma's computer after a virus problem, and I've come a long way but a couple problems still remain. First and foremost, search results have been hijacked and clicking on them will take me to ad sites most of the time. This is true of Firefox 3.6 and IE8. I have only tested on Google so I'm not sure if Yahoo et al. are affected as well.

The other problem, and possibly related, is that AVG 11 says "VDB check failed" and I can't run any scans. (originally the computer had AVG 10 which worked fine, I updated and now this is happening). This problem isn't as big of a concern to me at the moment, as perhaps an uninstall/reinstall will fix it.

Things I have run in attempt to fix the browser issue:
- AVG (before I updated to the version that's now not working)
- MalwareBytes
- CCleaner
- Spybot
- Hijack This (Can post log if requested)
- ComboFix (I ran this before reading that I should wait to run it until asked, sorry)

Nothing thus far has fixed it.

In reading the Preparation Guide here at bleepingcomputer, I ran DDS, and the logs are below/attached. Gmer, however, just keeps freezing my computer as soon as I try to run it.

Please help! Thanks

PS, this a Win XP SP3 Compaq Presario machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
Notepad will open with the results.
Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
