<rant>

I've had this ongoing issue with my ISP for over three years now. I have DSL provided by Fairpoint Communications, who took over this area from Verizon. This issue has spanned both companies.

Periodically, and usually during daytime hours, my internet connection keeps dropping and then coming back up. I'll be online, my connection will drop, stay down for anywhere from 10 to 60 seconds, and then come back up. It will stay up for anywhere from 1 to 3 minutes, then drop again. This will often go on for hours on end. It's not the computer itself, because this has happened with two different desktop computers and my laptop. The modem has been replaced four times. In fact, everything from the telephone pole to the wall jack where my modem connects to the DSL line has been replaced. It is a maddening situation, especially when I'm playing my online RPG, or in the middle of transferring files for work to an ftp server. My neighbors all experience the same problem, but neither Verizon or now Fairpoint have had any success in identifying and correcting the issue.

I have been stuck with two options since we've lived here - dialup, or DSL. Finally, though, there are enough people living on our road that Comcast has decided that it will be profitable for them to provide cable service to this area. The trucks have been out there daily for almost a week, hanging cable and getting things ready. I can't wait!!

Finally, I can tell Fairpoint Communications to take their lousy service and put it where the sun will never, ever shine...

I really feel for your problems, and know from personal experience the immense joys of finally getting DSL.

No, this is DSL that I'm using now. I'm going to broadband cable as soon as everything is in place for the transition. I can't wait.
