First definately was infected/hacked/comprimised as lost money via my online banking.

Work PC is meant to be protected by McAfee Enterprise, but appears it was out of date and not protecting against modern threats. Small business doens't have an IT support, my own fault for using online banking at work. Dealing with the money return with Halifax atm - wish me luck.

So far:
I installed AVG (trial) and it immediately detected and cleared several malware & Trojans, however it is now stuck in a loop regarding Winlogon.exe and explorer.exe which still list as WIN32/Patched infected, AVG whitelists these files so it can't fix them. Computer does still shows signs of infection as it will not navigate to common antivirus websites (suprised it navigated here tbh). Instead jumping to random pages on the internet.

Looking for suggestion other than the large hammer that is currently sitting on my desk.

HJT - log attached.

Tried Avast Free, again detected & Cleaned various threats including some Java stuff. Still left with winlogon.exe explorer.exe infected. Rebooted and ran startup scan, few more nastys detected and again problems with explore.exe and winlogon.exe

Tried repair option didn't work, tried delete option with same effect.
Have a name for the nasty now, win32:Bamital-AO

System booted into windows, but all desktop icons not showing, along with start menu. Ctrl-Alt-Del works bringing up the task manager. Tried running explorer exe from tast manager but get error box, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have approriate permission (OK)" Browsed drive via task manager and explorer.exe is still there.

Oh well... managed to drop a fresh uninfected copy of explorer from a spare machine, which worked, and restored desktop icons etc.
Avast immediated screamed and blocked winlogon trying to reinfect explorer.
Tried, but can't use the same trick with winlogon unfortunately.

Hi

Please run the following:

Please download DDS from either of these links

LINK 1
LINK 2

and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds to run the tool.
  • When done, two DDS.txt's will open.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
---------------------------------------------------
Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt
Attach.txt.

NEXT

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. It will be a randomly named executable.
  • Double click the exe file.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

    Posted Image
    Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Houston, we have a problem...

Deactiviated and uninstalled AVG link scanner.
Deactivate Avast / McAfee

Combofix ran, attempted to connect and download recovery console, however at that point the computers network connection seemed to go offline.
Carried on, "attempting to scan for Malware"
All icons disapeered, then reappeared. Combo fix proceeded to Complete stages 1-50. After which it complained that a system file was still infected, attempting to restore explorer.exe. Then it did the same message for winlogon.exe. At which point the computer immediately rebooted, no warning was given.

Computer booted, however when I pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del to logon and enter windows password. The following error message occured:
Instruction at "0x7c80f986" referenced memory at "0x00d20400" The memory could not be written. Press ok to terminate, or cancel to debug. Pressed OK.
The mouse remained active for a while, but the system still had the standard blue background.
System rebooted on its own.

On reboot, system accepted password, but didn't load desktop environment. Gave it 20mins, then loaded explorer.exe from a zip drive.
After desktop loaded error message "Winlogon.exe has encountered a problem and needed to close" then followed by "System has recovered from serious error"

At this point the network isn't active on the PC. Local or Internet.

:(

EDIT: Few reboots later, network back up and running. Still having to manually launch explorer.exe

Hi

this is not unusual for the infection that you have, don't worry, we can fix it, but I need to see a log from ComboFix

please navigate to c:\combofix.txt and see if there is a log

if not, please re-run Combofix and wait until it produces a log for you, it can seem to take forever sometimes, so please be patient.

Hi,

Do you have access to your installation disk as we will need to replace the explorer.exe and the winlogon.exe files.

If you don't have your disk, do you have access to another machine with the exact same Operating System as your own where we could copy them from?

Please do the following:

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

DirLook::
c:\program files\tmp
c:\program files\win
c:\program files\bYjDqJHr

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As... Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save ...

Posted Image

  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

NEXT

  • Please go to VirSCAN.org FREE on-line scan service
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the "Suspicious files to scan" box on the top of the page:
    • c:\windows\GPInstall.exe
  • Click on the Upload button
  • If a pop-up appears saying the file has been scanned already, please select the ReScan button.
  • Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
  • Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.

Ok,

we need to replace those infected files

please use a USB

On a clean machine, > it must be the exact same operating system, with the same service pack

Navigate to the following files > right click them > choose copy > copy them to the USB

c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe

c:\windows\explorer.exe

now go to the infected computer

Open the USB drive on the infected computer

Open up the c:\drive on the infected computer as well, now copy the winlogon.exe and explorer.exe files drirectly into your c:\drive so you end up with:

c:\winlogon.exe
c:\explorer.exe

Now do the following:

We need to boot into the recovery console -

Restart your computer

Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start (be fast you only have a couple of seconds)

Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console

You must now enter which Windows installation to log onto. (usually 1) Type 1 and press enter.

When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER

A command prompt will open:

At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

ren C:\windows\explorer.exe explorer.bad
ren C:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe winlogon.bad
copy C:\explorer.exe C:\windows\explorer.exe
copy C:\winlogon.exe C:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe

take note of the spaces - you must type it exactly as it is written

make sure you get the message that the file(s) were copied successfully.

If you did not get a message that the files were copied successfully you will have to name explorer.bad & winlogon.bad back to .exe or the computer will not boot.

Once you are done type exit to leave the recovery console and reboot.

Re-run ComboFix - allow it to update if it requests to do so.

Print out these instructions before you start > if you have any questions about this procedure, please ask.

Hi

Please do the following:

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

FCopy::
c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe | c:\windows\system32\dllcache\winlogon.exe
c:\windows\explorer.exe | c:\windows\system32\dllcache\explorer.exe

Folder::
c:\program files\tmp
c:\program files\win
c:\program files\bYjDqJHr

File::
c:\windows\system32\winlogon.bad
c:\windows\explorer.bad

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As... Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
