I have another post on here regarding an infected computer, started with Thinkpoint, then some false windows xp security warning. I have elimianted those, and now he has a horrible redirect virus. I have run hijack this and am attaching the log file. Can someone help me from here? I have to go to his place to work on it, as it is a desktop computer and I don't have it with me, so I will have to try things the next day after any replies.
Thanks if you can help me review this log and tell me what to look for, I would be very appreciative!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer :welcome:

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Georgi :hello:

Thank you for the response, I understand you are incredibly busy. As the computer I am helping a friend with is not at my location, I will run the reports and submit to this forum. As of this time, the problem is still active, and I greatly appreciate the assistance. I am able to get to the infected computer on Friday 12/17/2010 and will post at that time.

Hi ibglfn9! (what a difficult nickname ^_^)

You've got a TDL infection. Let's run some tools and scans.

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent some things from being fixed.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.

* Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
* In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
* Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
* Expand the "Tools" menu.
* Click "Resident".
* Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
* In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\TDSSKiller folder). Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (v1.50) and save it to your desktop.
Download Link 1
Download Link 2Malwarebytes' may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet and double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to this Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • Malwarebytes will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • Under the Scanner tab, make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box, then click the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked and then click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows the database version and your operating system.
  • Exit Malwarebytes' when done.
Note: If Malwarebytes' encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally will prevent Malwarebytes' from removing all the malware.

Thanks, will try to get this done and post ASAP. Do I need to address the Avira mesage that pops up every reboot or startup, Avira has blocked "d:\autorun.inf", whereas d is a partition that has "recovery" on it.
and my nickname is an old license plate I had, that was short for "I be golfing 9".
Call me Dave if you'd rather!

Success! I disabled tea timer. I ran tdsskiller, and it did come up with the tdl4 rootkit error. I continued to "cure". It rebooted, I then ran a quickscan with the latest version and updates on malwarebytes. The quickscan showed no malicious items and no infections.
I then logged on went on to search for Antivirus programs, various websites, including bleeping computer.com, and was not redirected at all. I forgot to transfer the log file from TDSSkiller to the jump drive, as instructed, so I can not post it yet. I feel that since the redirect seems to be cured, you may not need it. If you still want it prior to closing this down, I will obtain it and post it for you either Wednesday or Thursday when I return to my friends computer.

So, Thank you so much for your assistance. It appears that the computer is back to normal at this point.

I do have one more question, and you can direct me to a different forum if you need to, or answer me if you can. His computer is running AVIRA AV on it, the free version. The AV continuously pops up the warning regarding d:\autorun.inf has been blocked. D contains "recovery" as it is a hard drive partition. Can you tell me why Avira would be blocking the autorun? Is it necessary or should we remove it? Prior to running TDSSkiller, Malwarebytes has been run with the full scan and we included scanning both C and D, and no threats were detected. After running TDSSkiller, I have only run the quickscan. Do you think it is necessary to run the full scan again and include both C and D and see if now there is some threat detected on D? Thank you again for all your time and assistance. This is a great website with fantastic support and knowledgebases.

Hi Dave,

TDL infections are pretty common nowadays so it was tdsskiller that fixed it.
It's probable that there are other infections on the pc though (hence the infected autorun.inf ).

Please double check with malwarebytes updating it before:

Please Update MalwareBytes this way:

- Open Malwarebytes
- Select the Update tab
- Click on <Check for Update>
- Let it update to the latest version

Once the program is updated, select the "Scanner tab, then, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Copy and Paste the entire Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

If you encounter this message:"c:\program files\malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll Unable to register the dll/ocx: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x5" Click on ignore mbamext.dll

*******************************************

disable avira and do the following scan:

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report
