Dear Bleeping Computer,

Firstly, thank you for offering to help us in this way. For many, I believe it could be the difference between complete failure and rescue... I know in my case that if I can't get this fixed I'm going to have a nervous breakdown since all my work is on here!

My problem is similar to something I have seen going around recently: in IE or Firefox, when I search for something in Google and then click on a result I get redirected to all kinds of bad sites. I also get new tabs opening for no reason which go to bad sites.

In addition to these problems I have also noticed that my restore points are corrupt and I cannot use them.

I have also found that I sometimes cannot open the control panel or other parts of my computer.

As such...I have followed the preparation guide and will now post my results below. Unfortunately I could not complete the GMER scan because my computer went to the blue screen of death during its execution - something which has not happened to me ever.

Also, it's worth noting: I have already run full scans with Malwarebytes (mbam), Hitman Pro and IObit 360 - all of them found rootkits and trojans and I was able to delete the rootkits / trojans in every case. However, even after all this I still have exactly the same problem as before.

Here's the DDS.txt - and the attach.txt is attached. I hope to hear from you soon, and am ready for your instructions!

Update:

After reading a bunch of stuff on here from people in similar trouble, I installed the TDSSKiller.exe (from Kaspersky I think) and it found a TDL4 rootkit. It then cured and said reboot. I rebooted but the computer jammed on the boot screen. I tried again and it booted. I ran the TDSSKiller again and it came up clean.

However, I then tried to use Malwarebytes to run a final test...and I got the blue screen of death again. I didn't have time to write down the error but it was to do with a file that ended in .sys.

So I'm not sure where I stand now with this - I mean, I seem to have deleted the TDSSKiller but now I got this blue screen.

I'm also aware, from reading the helpers on other people's threads, that once I've had this infection I should consider everything compromised EVEN AFTER DELETING IT! So I assume I am going to have to format my computer...

I'm really sorry to keep updating this with more - I'm just so stressed and upset about it (it's actually 3.15am here).

I have realised that I have some more serious problems besides the TDL4 (which I think has now been eliminated). By the way - since I wiped it I haven't had any problems nor redirects within Firefox.

Anyway, I have noticed that:

1. I am on Vista but only on Service Pack 1.
2. When I try to do a Windows Update it either hangs or just sits at 0% forever.

3. And very worryingly, I see that one of my svchost.exe processes often starts using more and more memory until eventually it uses up almost all of my memory! I have to end the process by force. But it happens over and over, especially when I'm trying to do a Windows Update.

I'm not sure what I should do now - do you want me to upload new DDS and Attach.txt logs? Can I install Service Pack 2 by just downloading it from the microsoft site and installing it?

Any help you can give would be unbelievably appreciated...
