Hi, yesterday my computer went haywire with a fake 'security' program popping up, and then Google redirecting me to malicious sites each time I did a search. I read extensively on the virus and decided to go ahead with ComboFix (I know, I know...)

It seemed to work. The log came up and the computer was running fine. THen i tried to log in to my email, and it 'redirected me' endlessly, with a white screen, and nothing else. I aborted that, fast. I changed my password on a safe computer, which I am on now. On my infected computer, I cannot log into anything, not even my work email. Therefore I have no way of snding the ComboFix file to this safe computer, to post here.

Please help me!
Thank you!

UPDATE::
Cleared everything, changed passwords, restarted my computer and logged in to something unimportant, my Flickr account, to see if things were working. Tada! They worked. Logged into Gmail, works fine too (albeit I did change the password).

I was able to access my ComboFix log. Here it is, if I need to take additional steps. I appreciate your help!

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

DDS::
uDefault_Search_URL = hxxp://srch-us10.hpwis.com/

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Thank you! So below is the latest combofix results. Computer scan went fine, is running fine... everything seems fine. I've had this computer for a long time, and used to do a lot of illegal downloading from mediafire, limewire, etc., but have since stopped. Is it possible my computer was infected through those sites? And what are some steps I can take in moving forward to protect myself? I dont have a subscription to Norton or anything like that. Thank you!

Hello

ok looking better.

from what i can see it looks like you have norton installed?
if it has expired uninstall it and run this removal tool

AppRemover

Please download AppRemover and save it to your DeskTop

  • Double click on AppRemover.exe to Start the program
  • Click on the NEXTbutton
  • select cleanup Failed uninstall and click on the NEXT
  • after the scan has completed (may take a few min) click on NEXT again
  • select all things that you know have been uninstalled before click on NEXT
  • after it has completed click on NEXT
  • click on Reboot Now to finish the removal

let me know if norton has been uninstalled so I can give you a free antivirus

I would ike to see a report that combofix makes.

extra combofix report

  • push the "windows key" + "R" (between the "Ctrl" button and "Alt" Button)
  • please copy and past the following into the box
C:\Qoobox\Add-Remove Programs.txt
  • click ok

copy and paste the report into this topic for me to review

Gringo
