Just like the topic description, do we need the packaged software that would come with the webcam both for video communication (like in using Skype) and for recording video? Would the webcam work for either of those without installing software? The reason for asking is that I have heard of Skype, which itself is software for communicating through the computer wirelessly through the internet, and most of the computers here have Windows Movie Maker on them; is this Windows Movie Maker program enough for recording and editing video or must the included packaged software that comes with the webcam be used?

For most webcams, the included package software contains the drivers necessary for the computer to operate the webcam. So yes, you need the drivers, although you may not need the entire software package.
