Hi - on my 'spare' PC I'm running Windows XP SP3, with IE 8 and run AVG anti-virus (once my Symantec license ran out). I have been having problems with google searches redirecting to advert pages. I tried to get started to post to the logs forum, but am having other problems that prevent that:

: I tried to activate Windows firewall, but I get an error - Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing service. I looked at my Add/remove programs, and see SP3 installed, but don't see that SP2 was installed.

: I then tried to go to Microsoft Updates to have it check for missing updates - I cannot seem to get to that page; I get an error message ('Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage').

: I downloaded MS Security Essentials (couldn't link to it from a search, had to type in the URL), but the update of the virus definitions failes with an error code 0x80072efe

: I did run a full scan with AVG, I downloaded Malwarebytes and ran that; don't know what else to do.

So I don't think any auto updates are succeeding, and I don't know in how long (this PC is remote to my home so I'm not here often). How can I get started with disinfecting my PC, when I can't even turn on the Windows firewall?

TIA -

I'm getting the same problem. Can not access microsoft update either with Explorer or Google.

I don't have any problems with google redirect yet.

Hi - please close this thread. I got a "blue screen of death" shortly after posting, and took my PC in to be cleaned.

Thanks!!
