Hi, I'm helping a friend of mine with his computer since I am slightly more computer savvy, but not to the point that I could figure this out. We've downloaded nearly every spyware scan program we could find but to no avail. Here is an outline of the problems he has had:

- His wallpaper on his desktop background was replaced by a blue background with a black box stating that there was spyware on his computer and he shouldn't continue using it until it was gone. When clicking on "properties" and trying to change the background, the option was greyed out. With all of our scanning attempts, we seem to have gotten rid of this one, or at least this element of it.

- His home page on Internet Explorer says "about:blank" in the address bar, but it instead displays a search engine called "Quick Web Search" which tries to look like an IE program. There are links to standard spam like sites (gambling, viagra, etc.) and the right click option on the page is disabled. There is a link to uninstall the homepage, which directs you to http://www.pcadprotector.cc/?qq&pin=58582, a supposed spyware removal site.

- I think I have noticed that some key words on websites have become links, which I know is usually common of some spyware programs to cause.

Those are all of the problems we are aware of.

As I've seen in this forum and some other forums, I have made a Hijack This log, as well as a Panda Scan report and Ewido scan report if you would like me to post those as well.

Thank you!

My name is David Posted Image

Please do both of the following before we start if possible!:

1) Please print off these intructions - they will be needed later when internet access is not available.
2) Save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above.
At the moment you may feel like you battling with your computer to keep it running smoothly, but doing the following things should most certainly help getting it back to how it was

It may look like a lot below - follow the instructions as carefully as possible and everything should be kool!
________________________________________________

Download CWShredder Here to its own folder.
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Click here to download AboutBuster created by Rubber Ducky
Unzip AboutBuster to the desktop then click the "Update Button" then click "Check for Update" and download the updates and then click "Exit".

Click here to download cwsserviceremove.zip : http://castlecops.com/zx/flrman1/cwsserviceremove.zip
Unzip it to your desktop and have it ready to run later.

Download CleanUp!
  • A window will open and choose SAVE, then DESKTOP as the destination.
  • On your Desktop, click on Cleanup40.exe icon.
  • Then, click RUN and place a checkmark beside "I Agree"
  • Then click NEXT followed by START and OK.
  • A window will appear with many choices, keep all the defaults as set when the Slide Bar to the left is set to Standard Quality.
  • Click OK

    DO NOT run it yet!
Download KillBox here: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip
Save it to your desktop.
DO NOT run it yet.

Make sure that you can see hidden files (Windows XP).
  • Click "Start".
  • Click "My Computer".
  • Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
  • Select the "View" tab.
  • Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading, select "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click "Yes" to confirm.
  • Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types".
  • Click "OK".

Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find

Network Security Service

Rightclick and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK. File-Exit the Services utility.

Note: You may get an error here when trying to access the properties of the service. If you do get an error, just select the service and look there in the top left of the main service window and click "Stop" to stop the service. If that gives an error or it is already stopped, just skip this step and proceed with the rest.

Boot into Safe Mode (start tapping the F8 key at Startup, before the Windows logo screen)

Double click on the cwsserviceremove.reg file you downloaded at the beginning to enter into the registry.......Answer yes when asked to have it's contents added to the registry

With IE closed, run Hijack This again.
Put a checkmark on these entries and hit "fix checked":

All right, so I have done everything from the previous post. The Panda Scan said that it found two viruses and twentysomething (!) spyware files. I recognized the one that is in the favorites folder, though I forgot to mention that in my first post as a problem. In his favorites, sites have been added, a few porn ones and even a whole folder of online gambling and how to get out of debt sites. I manually deleted them before, but once I restarted, they had all returned.

As of now, the home page is no longer coming up as the spyware site, I haven't gotten any popups yet and the desktop background is still fine. Now I only have to eradicate those two viruses and millions of spyware files.

Here is the new Hijack This log:

Please post a new log and in Notepad be sure to click on Format and place a check mark beside "word wrap" so the log will be easier to read.

Posted Image Congratulations! Posted Image
You have a clean Log. Sleep soundly .........after you do the following :-

Enable restore points
Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply
  • ClickOK.
I recommend you regularly visit the Windows Update Site , your lagging behind on a few of them!
  • Lots of Hacking/Trojans use the methods found (plugged by the updates) that have not been stopped by people not updating.
  • Update your machine, and they have one less helper, and you have one less headache!
  • Update ALL Critical updates and any other Windows updates for services/programs that you use.
  • You may find it easier to have windows automatically update! Here is a nice little article about turning on automatic updates
  • Note that it will download them for you, but you still have to actually click install.
  • Of course, you can always download updates seperately at: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Secure your web browser
  • Open Internet Explorer and click on the Tools menu and then click on
    Options.
  • Click onSecurity
  • Click the Internet icon
  • Click onCustom Level.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • Change the Allow paste operations via script to Disable
  • Click on OK
  • Save (if asked).
  • Click on Apply button
  • Click on OK

Alternatively you could use another browser such as
Mozilla Firefox
Opera or
Netscape

Get Some Protection
The following programs are useful in the fight against Malware. Best of all, they're FREE.
Download and install any or all . Be warned though ---- Unless you keep them regularly updated you are living with a false
sense of security.
  • Ad-Aware SE - This is a
program that scans for and removes known spyware from your machine.
  • Spybot Search &
    Destroy
-Similar to Ad-Aware but more configurable and incorporates Teatime, a memory resident utility that protects the system
registry. I recommend use both of these in tandem.
  • Spyware Blaster -
Prevents the addition of ActiveX Controls on your machines by
    isolating the system registry.
  • IE_Spyad - Uses the inbuilt IE restriction policy to stop your browser
from opening web pages in a much enhanced list of undesirable addresses.
    Tutorial
A good antiviral program is essential.AVG is one of the better known, and trusted, antivirals.

And Finally.........Lock the door with a Firewall . XP comes with its own simple firewall but I prefer to substitute it with
ZoneAlarm.

Glad i could help. Spread the work of BleepingComputer!

David
