My partner has a Dell Studio 1535 laptop. She just downloaded the latest Windows update. When she restarted the computer it took her to a black screen with a single line of white text indicating that various files were installing. It suddenly stopped at 430 of 49073 files with a message "!! 0xc0190036 !! 430/49073 (mfc42u.dll)" The computer is just hanging. If I power it off and restart it gives the option of a startup repair or to start normally. Starting normally leads to the hanging message; a startup repair fails to identify the issue, other than suggesting maybe a device has recently been attached. This is not the case.

Does anyone have any ideas?

hello,

have you tried starting in safe mode? if it does you can use system restore, or just uninstall the last update....(start tapping the f8 key after hitting the power button)

good luck
