I've owned Macs for years, and they've been very friendly. In fact, I'm entering this on a Mac, now. My issue is with a PC problem that it appears everybody seems to be getting: The dreaded redirect virus. I run Verizon FiOS on an Actiontec wireless router, if that helps. The problem actually started on two of my Macs with all these inane redirects, adware, etc. So I called Verizon and they actually addressed the issue by assigning the Macs different DNS numbers. Voila! Fixed! Then it showed up on my Toshiba A355-S6925 running Vista. I tried everything, even had it remotely scanned and someone came up with a "kernel.power" issue, and a couple of minor things they wouldn't i.d. or attempt to fix unless I forked over $169.99. Called Verizon and they wanted $89, as did McAfee...my virus software. I'd run Malwarebytes and a dozen other recommended cures before finally giving up. I scrubbed my hard drive, quit on Vista [it was time], and loaded in Windows 7 Ultimate with my additional software. Still there! A repair guy I know ran some of his stuff on it and used it for a couple of days: nothing came up. So I brought it home...and the problem instantly returned. Would just junking the hard drive fix it? Or...what would you do?

I've been told that the source of my redirect virus is most likely in my hard drive somewhere, but my computer knowledge (and patience) might be below the threshold for solving this. So there's the possibility of just yanking my hard drive and installing a new one with software, which is time-consuming but no big deal. My issue is that there is also the possibility that the Verizon Actiontec FiOS router has become infected and that if it were reset to factory default settings it might cure the problem that way. If I replace the hard drive and the router's bad I'm wasting a lot of time (and some cash) for nothing. Any suggestions for finding the answer to this issue? Or might there be other things I haven't considered which could affect my plan?

Hello, let's run this first and I have another option too.
Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

How do I get help? Who is helping me?For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear....Become a BleepingComputer fan: Facebook

Hello, as this is a 64 bit system some tools may not work. First we can look and see if the MBR (Master Booot Record ) is infected.
We can also see if it is in the Router ( I think it is).

To check for and confirm the MBR rootkit.

Please download mbr.exe and save it to the root directory, usually C:\ <- (Important!).
  • Go to Start > Run and type: cmd.exe
  • press Ok.
  • At the command prompt type: c:\mbr.exe >>"C:\mbr.log"
  • press Enter.
  • The process is automatic...a black DOS window will open and quickly disappear. This is normal.
  • A log file named mbr.log will be created and saved to the root of the system drive (usually C:\).
  • Copy and paste the results of the mbr.log in your next reply.
If you have a problem using the command prompt, you can just double-click on mbr.exe to run the tool.

OR
DNS/ Router ResetDownload and update MBAM (below) Do not run yet.

Next you must reset the router to its default configuration. This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router. Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds). If you don’t know the router's default password, you can look it up HERE.

However, if there are other infected machines using the same router, they will need to be cleared with the above steps before resetting the router. Otherwise, the malware will simply go back and change the router's DNS settings. You also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset. Check out this site HERE for video tutorials on how to properly configure your router's encryption and security settings. You may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using.

Once you have ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware on the infected system, and reset the router to its default configuration you can reconnect to the internet, and route

Boopme,
After reading your instructions last night, I started to try them and figured out quickly that I was too wiped to continue without messing something up. As it turned out, a tech at home has offered to do an analysis of my router to check it for this issue. We've thought it might be this for a while, but Verizon has been less than helpful with the necessary technical help (unless I pay cash up front) to check it out properly. I should know something one way or the other tomorrow or Wednesday. My final question for now is: If it is the router and I replace the router, should that solve the problem?
Thanks for all your help so far. I believe you've set me on the right track, but with my limited PC knowledge I'd feel more comfortable letting someone like him take it to the next level for now. At least he's done this a number of times before.

That;s fine by me. I would rather you be comfortable and as long as the same result is met ,all's good. Appreciate the updates.

Boopme!

I promised I'd get back, and here I am.
Fought (and I mean those words) with Verizon for two-plus hours on Wednesday morning until they (reluctantly) agreed to send me a new router (Actiontec MI424WR), with upgraded firmware. An hour after I cracked the box, it was up and running...perfectly. I pushed the encryption to the max and whacked out the password [they suggest making your own WEP key log-in as complicated as you can stand]. I've been running it all last night, then again all day today. No problem.
So...thanks for your advice and affirmation that my suspicions about the router were sound. The highlight: a pitying sympathizer fronted me a fresh, original copy of Windows 7 Pro with key. Life is good again.

:clapping: Glad to hear it and thanks for your reply. Happy computing and Merry Christmas.

Here's some info compiled by our quietman7 ...
Tips to protect yourself against malware and reduce the potential for re-infection:Avoid gaming sites, pirated software, cracking tools, keygens, and peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs. They are a security risk which can make your computer susceptible to a smörgåsbord of malware infections, remote attacks, exposure of personal information, and identity theft. Many malicious worms and Trojans spread across P2P file sharing networks, gaming and underground sites. Users visiting such pages may see innocuous-looking banner ads containing code which can trigger pop-up ads and malicious Flash ads that install viruses, Trojans and spyware. Ads are a target for hackers because they offer a stealthy way to distribute malware to a wide range of Internet users. The best way to reduce the risk of infection is to avoid these types of web sites and not use any P2P applications. Read P2P Software User Advisories and Risks of File-Sharing Technology.

Keeping Autorun enabled on USB and other removable drives has become a significant security risk due to the increasing number of malware variants that can infect them and transfer the infection to your computer. To learn more about this risk, please read:
