Dear Bleeping Computer Staff,

I've been having quite a bit of trouble with my laptop recently. It began as a redirection problem when using Google. Every time I would attempt to open
a link I would be redirected to google.com.au/webhp. Also the start-up, shut-down and general use has been slow. In addition to this I began getting pop-ups for other sites randomly when browsing, leading me to believe it is a virus. When following the 'Preparation Guide for Malware Removal/Requesting Help' my laptop showed up a blue screen and began dumping files before shutting down. This happened twice, both times it was while scanning to create a GMER log. Below is the DDS Log. I'm very appreciative to anyone who can help!

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi Gringo, I did all as you said. I encountered two problems however. The first time I ran Combofix my laptop seemed to crash, bringing up a blue screen saying and error had occured and it would perform a physical dump of memory, then shut itself off.

When I restarted I ran Combofix and all went fine until the final stages when it was running, when the same thing happened again.
The laptop restarted itself and all appeared fairly normal. The log was located where Combofix said it would be prior to the blue screen appearing.
It is posted below, however I am not sure if it is the entire log because of that second crash. Here it is:

Hello

That log is not corect so lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

HI,

I tried running Combofix twice in safe mode, both times the computer crashed, opening up a blue screen which appears for about ten seconds, saying it is dumping physical memory. I'm running the computer through normal mode now and Firefox will no longer open, nor does iTunes.
Upon starting up the computer, this window appeared:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.2
Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: 1000007e
BCP1: C0000005
BCP2: 8207E5D8
BCP3: 89967AA4
BCP4: 899677A0
OS Version: 6_0_6002
Service Pack: 2_0
Product: 768_1

Files that help describe the problem:
C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini121310-04.dmp
C:\Users\Mitch\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-60138-0.sysdata.xml
C:\Users\Mitch\AppData\Local\Temp\WER4CC8.tmp.version.txt

Read our privacy statement:

Now that I cannot run combofix and post a log I am more concerned and confused than before. I hope this post made sense!

Hello

Very good now lets see if we can get combo to work now that the rootkit is gone

update combofix

I would like you to download an updated virsion of combofix.

Delete the version of combofix you have now on your desktop and download a new one from here

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note:Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

FBI Cyber Education Letter
File sharing infects 500,000 computers
USAToday

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.
[/list]
Your Java is out of date.

It can be updated by the Java control panel

Hi Gringo.

Things have run fairly smoothly. I have only had one issue and that is with HiJackThis.
When I click 'Do A System Scan and Save a Log File', I am presented with the same message after it scans:

"Cannot find the C:\Programs Files\Trend Micro\HiJackThis\highjackthis.log Do you want to create a new file?"

I am running Vista and attempted to run the files by right-clicking as administrator. The option doesn't appear however, so I have run just by double clicking it.

I have also attempted to this action:

notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

To save the file as instructed, however it doesn't seem to do anything. I'm not sure where I'm going wrong ...

Here is my log from MBAM if it is any use without the report from HiJackThis yet.
