Thanks to the great information on bleepingcomputer.com, I've been able to use rkill and Malwarebytes to clean off my parent's and in-law's PCs multiple times. This time I got hit, and the RKill/MalwareBytes combo isn't working.

The problems began Thursday evening, 12/2, when I ran an XVid add-on from an unknown website to stream America's Funniest Home Videos. My inner voice said "Don't do it", but my interest in taming my out-of-control kids got the better of me. (Curse you, Bob Sagat and your juvenile humor!)

Lastly, I need opinions... if I decide to clean-install Windows 7 on a new drive, what steps would recommend I perform to safely connect and transfer the data files (docs, videos, pics) to the new drive?

Thanks in advance for your consideration in helping out!

-----------------
Indications
-----------------
- AVG shows (about every 30 minutes) that it found Trojan horse Generic18.ANDC in the .\Local Settings\iexplorer.exe file.
- A Windows error occasionally pops up saying Iexplorer.exe (presumably the above file) has performed an illegal function.
- Every so often, Firefox redirects me to an unintended location.
- Chrome has loading issues at times. Task Manager shows that it launches iexplorer.exe.

-----------------
System Basics
-----------------
- XP Pro SP3, 32bit, Dell Inspiron 530 Core2Quad 2.4GHz, 3GB RAM
- Running AVG 8.5.449, Microsoft Firewall

-----------------
Actions Performed (not in this order, and not necessarily only once)
-----------------
- Executed RKill, which shuts down iexplorer, Dropbox and Chrome (although not consistently).
- Executed Quick and Full scans of MalwareBytes in both standard and Safe modes. MalwareBytes finds and deletes Malware.Trace registry file just about every time it runs, even in Safe Mode.
- Executed Defogger
- Executed TDSSKiller
- Executed SUPERAntiSpyware - found and cleaned several items.
- Executed ESet Online Scanner - found and cleaned several items.
- None have been able to consistently show a clean run.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer :welcome:

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Hello, and thank you for responding to my request for help.

I did end up purchasing a new hard drive and installing Windows 7 Ultimate onto it, effectively starting from scratch. Before you close out this topic, would you be willing to provide me direction as to how to safely clean the files from the old drive before I transfer them to the new one? I've already performed the following on the (now-slave) drive, all of which now report clean results:
- MalwareBytes (both quick and full scans) --> cleaned
- SUPERAntySpyware full scan --> cleaned
- Microsoft Security Essentials full scan --> cleaned

Any other steps I should perform? Thank you again!

Regards,

Brian

Hello Brian.

Those scans should suffice. To avoid transfering infections, only copy data files (documents, photos, music, videos etc). Do not copy any program files from the old hard drive.

In any case, your Windows 7 is a 64 bit operating system (90% chance). Any malware on your old 32 bit XP would not work to its full extent on your new installation, so you needn't worry very much.

With Regards,
The Panda
