Happy Holidays!
Hoping someone can help me out. It looks like my HP Netbook got infected with a nasty virus or rootkit after loaning it to my cousin for a day.

Here's the details:

- HARDWARE: HP Netbook / WinXP & SP3 / 1.60GHz Intel Atom / 1GB RAM / Windows IE v7
- Symptoms: - Most of my Google Search Result links gets redirected to other affiliate sponsored landing pages
- Some of my Yahoo & Bing Search Result links also gets redirected
- Sometimes new browser windows are opened with random affiliate sponsored landing pages

I am somewhat computer saavy so I have already read through most of the other posts in regards to Google Search Link Hijacks and have already done the following:

- Scanned with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (latest version / definitions on 12/01/2010) / rebooted afterwards.
- Scanned with Spybot - Search & Destroy (latest version / definitions on 12/01/2010) / rebooted afterwards.
- Scanned with SUPERAntiSpyware (latest version / definitions on 12/01/2010) / rebooted afterwards.
- Scanned with Ad-Aware (latest version / definitions on 12/02/2010) / rebooted afterwards.

I also looked at the Hosts file.. it was clean with just the XP default setting (127.0.0.1 / localhost). I also looked at the previous backup versions but did not see any third-party additions either.

I also have scanned my netbook with the following Anti-Rootkit tools:

- First I used "Defogger" to turn off the CD Emulation drivers for my system.
- Hijack Hunter v1.8.4.0
- RootRepeal
- SysProt AntiRootkit v1.0.1.0
- TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.1.0) (by Kaspersky Lab) = No Infection Found
- ZbotKiller.exe (by Kaspersky Lab) = No Infection Found / Noted 12 Hooked Imports
- Then I used "Defogger" to turn on the CD Emulation drivers again for my system.

To help expedite the healing process, I have already ran the following tools and attached their reports to this forum:

- MBAM => mbam-log-2010-12-02 (06-16-58).txt
- Ad-Aware => Ad-Aware removal log.txt
- HiJack This v2.0.4 => hijackthis.log
- HiJack Hunter v1.8.4.0 => Hijack Hunter - logs_12-2-2010_1_17_51_PM.log
- Win32kDiag.exe => Win32kDiag.txt
- DSS.scr => DDS.txt & DDS - Attach.txt
- Peek.bat => Peek - Log.txt
- Bootcheck.exe => bootcheck.txt
- OTL => OTL.Txt
- OTS => OTS.Txt & OTS-2.Txt
- RSIT => RSIT - 3mnth Log.txt
- RootRepeal => RootRepeal - 'Report' Report.txt

Please note that I have updated both my Adobe Reader (to Reader X) and Java SE (to JRE 6.0.22).

My guess is that I may have a super sneaky MBR rootkit or something that emulates normal DLL or SYS files as nothing really jumped out at me from the logs above. I look forward to your support / guidance.

I will not do anything more with this computer until I receive your guidance.

Thank you!

Phil

While waiting your reply and assistance, I went ahead and did the following:

Ran the following utilities:

1) TDSSKiller.2.4.10.1 => No Infections Found (log attached)
2) Rootkit Unhooker LE v3.8.388.590 SR2 => No Infections Found (log attached)
3) MBRCheck v1.2.3 => Found an unknown MBR type.. tried to reset the MBR twice but does not change.
Here is the MBR Check comments:
\\.\C: --> \\.\PhysicalDrive0 at offset 0x00000000`00007e00 (NTFS)
PhysicalDrive0 Model Number: SAMSUNGHS082HB
Size Device Name MBR Status
--------------------------------------------
74 GB \\.\PhysicalDrive0 Unknown MBR code
SHA1: BBF289AC40BA09F2CC1797655D4799D2AB148CB5

I will now scan my system using the ESET Online tool (http://www.eset.com/online-scanner) and will
attach that report along with a new DSS report log.

Looking forward to your reply and assistance.

Phil

PS.. I will attach the Unhook Util log when I get back from dinner tonight.

Ok, here is the RootKit Unhooker Report. I tried to attach it but it was too large and I am not able to attach *.zip or *.rar files.. so I have 'pasted' it in below for your viewing pleasure. :-)

Here are the results from the ESET Online Scan (http://www.eset.com/online-scanner).

It found a couple inflected files... two or three of them I believe are 'false positives' but I let them quarantine and delete them as I really did not need them. I have attached the log below.

OK.. as promised.. here is the latest DDS report after the ESET Online Scan & virus removal.

Please let me know if you would like me to attach the new DDS Attachment report also.

*** I am still thinking I have some kind of MBR rootkit virus that is undetectable by the usual Anti-Virus apps. I tried to replace the MBR code with standard XP MBR code using the MBRCheck. Unfortunately after rebooting, the changes did not really take hold as the 'unknown MBR code' is still present.

I hope to hear from you soon.. I need some guidance on fixing this mess.

Thanks in advance!

Phil

Sorry.. I could not attach the DDS log as it was too big.. so I am pasting it below.

Ok.. as I wait for your support.. I am trying to figure out what else can I do on my side to help expedite the process. Figured an updated OTL report would be helpful.. so I just ran a full scan and will paste the logs below.
(Seems I have maxed out the alotted space for attachments with this post... sorry, I did not realize there was an overall limit for the post thread.)

I am also trying to do an Online Kasperky scan... unfortunately, my last 6 attempts ends with a break in the internet connection so the antivirus definitions download fails. Not sure if it is my faulty wireless or something more evil going on behind the scenes. :-(

Please note that I am still being re-directed to other sites so definitely could use your help!!

Phil

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs

Hi Gringo,

Happy Holidays! I look forward to working with you in 'squashing' the little bugs that are wreaking havoc on my HP Netbook. As requested, I will attach the logs below in text format.

Observations... Nothing terrible happened during the process.
-- I was successful in "disabling" my CD Emulation using DEFOGGER.
-- I did note that two seperate IE windows popped up with ads from Google-Analytics.com.
Here are their URLS:

http://www.google-analytics.com/pp.php?to=sor&from=ua1&type=1292186439

http://www.google-analytics.com/pp.php?to=con&from=a1&type=www.bleepingcomputer.com:&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bleepingcomputer.com%2Fforums%2Ftopic364671.html

FYI.. I ran a bunch of virus scanners earlier this week and nothing was found, but MBRCheck.exe did noticed an unrecognizable MBR code. Since no stealth rootkits or strange hooks are showing up, could it be a MBR virus?
Curious to hear your thoughts. :-)

Here are the logs:

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo,

Good Morning! As instructed, I created and executed the Batch file. The log is pasted below.

An Interesting Observation... ever since I updated my Ad-Aware 'free' version software to the new version of software, I am now getting a lot of pop-ups. This never happened before.. used to be just browser re-directs. I wonder if any of the free anti-malware or anti-virus programs I am running could be responsible?

Here is the Router Log:

Gringo,

I am a little worried by the finding:

Server: UnKnown
Address: 213.109.65.40

As that IP address is actually from a server in the "Russian Federation". How does it get binded with the Google Domain, as I have checked the host file and it was clean?

I am waiting for your instructions..
but out of curiousity, I did a RegEdit search and found the IP address listed a couple times in the Registry. Here is one of the registry values: HKEY_Local_Machine/SYSTEM/ControlSet002/Services/TCPIP/Parameters/DhcpNameServer
with the value data = "213.109.65.40 213.109.75.90".

Phil

Hello

Yes it looks like the DNS settings on the router have been changed.

Resetting Router

Let’s try to reset the router to its default configuration.
  • This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router.
  • Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds).
  • If you don’t know the router's default password, you can look it up. Here
  • You also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset.
  • You may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using or you can use OpenDNS
Note: After resetting your router, it is important to set a non-default password, and if possible, username, on the router. This will assist in eliminating the possibility of the router being hijacked again.

flush the DNS:

Now lets flush the DNS on the computer:

  • click on Start
  • select run
  • enter cmd and hit enter
  • a black window will open.
  • please enter the following text into that window and hit enter:

    ipconfig /flushdns

Now lets check the router again

Create and Run Batch File
Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below, into Notepad:
@echo off
>Log1.txt (
ipconfig /all
nslookup google.com
nslookup yahoo.com
ping -n 2 google.com
ping -n 2 yahoo.com
route print
)
start Log1.txt
del %0
Save this as router.bat Choose to Save type as - All Files and where to save - Desktop - then close the Notepad file.

It should look like this: Posted Image <--XP
Double-click on router.bat to run it. it will open notepad when done please post back the results

Hi Gringo,
Thanks for the quick reply. I have been putting off logging into the router as I need to reset it so my PS3 and Bluray wireless player can connect. I will head home for lunch and see if I can get it reset and DNS flushed.

Question... How is it possible that the router got changed, especially since I have a custom password on it and it requires a physical connection to even log in to the router? This netbook has never been physically connected to the router.. and I don't get this symptom on any of my other computers which are also connecting to the router via wireless and physical connection?

I really appreciate your support.. Thank you!
Phil
