Hi, this is my first post and hope somebody can steer a PC noob in the right direction - I'd be most grateful

The problem is this: I'm using AntiVir Anti Virus software and cannot update - the update window starts the download and then disappears within seconds. I posted on the AntiVir forum and only had one reply which said I may have a registry problem and would benefit from getting a HijackThis log checked. Now, I have no idea if this is good advice, but it's left me uncertain as to whether something malicious is preventing me from updating. I've followed the preparation guide and done the necessary scans. I'd be extremely grateful if someone could look over the log and tell if all is well - I apologise if I'm wasting anyone's time! Thank you.

Hi there and welcome to Bleeping Computer !

As you may have noticed already, the forums are very busy at the moment and i have noticed your log has gone unanswered so far!

We look at the oldest logs first, and we were wondering that if you still need help, please start by posting a new HijackThis log in this topic and i will then be able to take a look!

Thanks very much :flowers:

David

Fix this entry with HJT:

O4 - Global Startup: VTAgentReboot.exe

Find and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\VTAgentReboot.exe

Download WinPFind!
  • Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.
  • Reboot your computer into Safe Mode
  • Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
  • When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer.
  • Be patient as this scan may take a while. When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed.
  • Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.
Reboot back to normal mode and post a new HJT log

Hi David,

Following your instructions, I've tried to fix with HJT:

O4 - Global Startup: VTAgentReboot.exe

HJT can't fix this as is says it may be in use - use Task Manager to close it down. I've opened Task Manager but am unable to locate the above. There's an agent.exe in Processes tab, but being a noob I don't know if this is it and don't want to screw things up by messing with it.

Can you please advise?

Many thanks,
Darren

Ok, can you carry on to the Winpfind log, we can do that bit later.

David, as requested, please find Winpfind log:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Download killbox from here:

KillBox

Unzip the folder to your desktop.

1. Start Killbox.exe
2. Select the Delete on Reboot option.
3. Copy the complete text in bold below to the clipboard by highlighting the filepaths and pressing Control + C:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\aswBoot.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\VTAgentReboot.exe

4. Go to the File menu of Killbox, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
5. Click the Delete File button that is a red-and-white X. When asked if you want to delete these files say Yes. When asked if you want to reboot now, say No.
6. Exit Killbox.
____________

Fix the HJT line again:

O4 - Global Startup: VTAgentReboot.exe

David, system is running sweetly, thanks for your help. Haven't been able to check the Anti-Vir updates I was having a problem with, as I switched to Avast before I came here. I will go back to Anti-Vir though,as I prefer it, but don't anticipate any problems now. Interesting, at start-up, an annoying request to load a Virtual Truck CD Rom has now gone - brilliant!

What was this VTAgentReboot.exe, out of interest?

Anyway, thanks again. I will be making a small donation too.

Darren

Ok! Glad i was able to help you!

VTAgentReboot.exe is searchmiracle spyware!

The log is clean! :flowers:

Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore. In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

David

David, thanks again

I want to make a small donation but your link doesn't seem to be working properly - I have no Paypal email address to send to.
