Hey guys,
About a month ago I posted here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic352373.html). The system was fixed, and is now entirely stable and usable, but still isn't working quite right.

1. I replaced Avast with Panda, and its Firewall and Vulnerabilities functions seem to be working fine, but the Antivirus one still will not let me launch the scanner. Tried to manually start “Panda TPSrv” process in services.msc panel, got same "cannot start/do not have permission" error message "Avast Scanner" had been giving me before computer was cleaned.

2. Checked Windows Updates log to be on safe side and discovered that almost all Updates have failed to install since computer was originally infected, save only for XP security updates. In particular, Windows has tried to download and install Installer 3.1 every day since then. Tried to manually start “Windows Installer” in services.msc panel--no luck.

3. Am still getting VERY occasional Google redirects w/Firefox, though not in same way as before. Searching (through upper right corner box & on main page) now works fine, but sometimes get redirected when clicking on link on search results page, often when pages relate to software/computing.

4. Often when I left-click on a WMP affiliated file (avi, etc) when WMP is not already open, the system will fail to open WMP, and CPU usage in task manager will go over 50%, and I have to quit media player in TM. WMP does not seem to hang if WMP is already open first, or if WMP is not open but I right-click on an avi file and then tell it to "Open" using WMP.

When I first got the laptop back from the shoppe, upon the very first startup Panda caught and zapped "inudoxiyetuk.dll" file. So far so good. But now, upon startup, I get this error:
Cannot Access inudoxiyetuk.dll. The specified module cannot be found.
Clearly something is trying to access this (quarantined) file and not finding it. I simply click OK, and everything is fine, but it's a minor annoyance. It may be significant that my DDS log contains this line:
mRun: [Jbuqu] rundll32.exe "c:\windows\inudoxiyetuk.dll",Startup

6. Tried to remove nasty(s) by running rkill & malwarebytes. Rkill worked (stopped & restarted explorer, etc) Rkill log said this:

Services Stopped:

Processes terminated by Rkill or while it was running:

\\.\globalroot\Device\svchost.exe\svchost.exe
\\?\C:\WINDOWS\system32\WBEM\WMIADAP.EXE

Malwarebytes, however, crashed immediately after beginning full scan--again, same as when computer was first infected. Tried renaming MBAM file--no luck, same result.

And now, da logz. In midst of running DDS, Panda came up with this alert:

Virus Detected: Generic Trojan
Path c:\Windows\System32\Icarator.dll

but DDS kept running and finished fine.

GMER, however, crashed after Panda came up with this:

Virus Detected: Trj/Sinowal.XFN
Path: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\CXRUC99A.SYS

shortly after which it crashed and would not start again. Redownloaded and renamed "gmer.exe" to "test.exe", after which it ran fine and completed.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Casey

If I have been helping you and I do not reply within 48hours, feel free to send me a PM.

Here are the new logs--there seem to be no significant changes.
Both DDS and GMER this time ran and completed without any virus warnings or hangs.

Hello Landulph,
  • Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
  • My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean".
  • Finally, please reply using the Posted Image button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply, unless they do not fit into the post.

1.
Please copy the contents of the code box below, open notepad and paste it there. On the top toolbar in notepad select file, then save as. In the box that opens type in remservice.bat for the file name. Right below that click the down arrow in the line for "save as" and select all files. Save this to your desktop and close notepad.

@echo off
sc stop cxruc99a
sc delete cxruc99a
del remservice.bat
EXIT
Locate the remservice icon on your desktop and double click it. A box will pop up briefly on your screen and disappear, this is normal.

NOTICE: This file was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine.
Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

2.
We need to run a reg file

1. Copy the following into a notepad (Start>Run>"notepad"). Do not copy the word "code".
 REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Jbuqu"=-
2. Click File, then Save As... .
3. Click Desktop on the left.
4. Under the Save as type dropdown, select All Files.
5. In the box File Name, input fix.reg
6. Hit Ok.
7. Double click fix.reg. A message box will pop up asking whether you want to merge the file with the registry. Click "yes". Once complete, click "ok"
NOTICE: This file was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine.
Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

3.
Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click onPosted Image ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

Things to include in your next reply::
Combofix.txt
How is your machine running now?

Hi, fireman4it, and thanks so much for your assistance!

I'm still getting "Access is denied" errors when I try to start "Panda TPSrv" and "Windows Installer" in services.msc panel, even after a post-Combofix restart. Remservice.bat, fix.reg, and Combofix ran and finished without any hangs but--I did something INCREDIBLY stupid. I forgot I had XP Pro rather than Home installed and thus installed the wrong Recovery Console. Can we remove that and install the right one before doing anything else, because I do want to have it on my system. (What can I say--Combofix is a tool, and so am I!)

Here is the Combofix log:

Hello,

The recovery console don't matter much as long as its Xp and not Vista or Windows 7. It seems your Panda Antivirus has become corrupt do to the virus. I would Uninstall it completely then reinstall it. Please follow all my directions below before reinstalling Panda.

Uninstall Panda

You should be able to remove Panda products via Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
If you need instructions on how to do so, please consult: How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer
The following removal utility can be used to uninstall the program if the uninstall via Add/remove does not work:
  • Download AVCleaner10.exe from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Run the UNINSTALLER_07.EXE file by double-clicking it .
  • A window will be displayed requiring confirmation to begin the uninstallation and warning about the system restart once the process has ended. Click Yes.
Note: No progess bar is displayed. It is necesary to wait until this message is displayed Thank you for waiting. Hit OK to reboot.
Panda should now be removed from your PC.

Original instructions can be found here:
http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/support/card?id=23010&IdIdioma=2

1.
We need to run a CFScript.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
c:\windows\system32\wbem\SETD.tmp
c:\windows\system32\wbem\SETA1.tmp
c:\windows\system32\wbem\SET41.tmp
c:\windows\system32\wbem\SET11.tmp
c:\documents and settings\Landulph\Application Data\Microsoft\Installer\{45A66726-69BC-466B-A7A4-12FCBA4883D7}\HiJackThis.exe

Domains::

DDS::

uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = 127.0.0.1:8080

Firefox::
FF - ProfilePath - c:\documents and settings\Landulph\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\c4e97zyq.default\
FF - prefs.js: browser.startup.homepage - hxxp://www.telegraph.co.uk
FF - prefs.js: keyword.URL - hxxp://search.fast-find.net/?sid=10101062100&s=

Registry::
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile]
"EnableFirewall"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\services]
"PavPrSrv"=-

Driver::
AvFlt
DFBCFDBA
PavSRK.sys
PavTPK.sys

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

2.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.44) and save it to your desktop.
Download Link 1
Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

3.
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
Note for Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.)

You can refer to this short video by: neomage
**Note**
To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.

Things to include in your next reply::
Combofix.txt
MBAM log
Eset log
A new DDS log

Before doing this, quick question: should i reinstall Panda immediately after uninstalling it, or wait until we've finished the other cleanup procedures?

Oh, also, this line in my firefox prefs (FF - prefs.js: keyword.URL - hxxp://search.fast-find.net/?sid=10101062100&s=) is a remnant of the earlier "Searchbox" google redirect I was originally infected with, and I'd really like to get rid of it if possible, even though it doesn't seem currently active.

Thanks again, Fireman!

Hello,

Before doing this, quick question: should i reinstall Panda immediately after uninstalling it, or wait until we've finished the other cleanup procedures?

Please wait till we have the machine clean before installing it. Panda will probably pick up some of our tools as viruses.

I have it set for deletion in the CfScript already. :)

Almost done, Fireman--but for ESET, after it finishes scanning and cleaning, should I check or uncheck the options "Uninstall Application on close" and "Delete quarantined files"?

Thanks!

Okay, F-man:

1. Uninstalled Panda
2. Ran CFScript w/Combofix
3. Ran Malwarebytes Quick Scan
4. Ran ESET scan
5. Ran DDS

All tools ran and completed fine, with no hangs or warnings (and MBAM and ESETS each found some nasties--see attached logs). But I'm still getting "Could not start the Windows Installer service on local computer. Error 5: Access is denied" in services.msc. (I haven't tried Panda TPSrv, as I haven't reinstalled Panda yet!) Any thoughts?

Hello,

Lets run a little utility that may help.

1.
We need to repair some of windows' internal registration settings
  • Please download Dial-A-Fix from one of the following mirrors:
  • Extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Double click Dial-a-Fix.exe to start the program.
  • Press the green double checkmark box (Looks like this: Posted Image)
  • UNcheck "Empty Temp Folders", as well as "Adjust Time/Date" in the prep section. The prep section should then look like this:
    Posted Image
  • When the window looks like this, press the GO button in the bottom of the window.
    Posted Image
  • Exit/Close Dial-A-Fix

2.
Hello, your log looks much better now.

Your Microsoft Windows installation is out of date.
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch for it. After the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC, so keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC
Go here to check for & install updates to Microsoft applications.
Note: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use Internet Explorer for it, and allow the ActiveX control that it wants to install.

Please reboot and repeat the update process until there are no more updates to install.

3.
Uninstall Combofix
  • Make sure that Combofix.exe that you downloaded is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
o *If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
  • Click on Posted Image then Run....
  • Now copy & paste the green bolded text in the run-box and click OK.

    ComboFix /Uninstall

    Posted Image

<Notice the space between the "x" and "/".> <--- It needs to be there
Windows Vista users: Press the Windows Key + R to bring the Run... Command and then from there you can add in the Combofix /Uninstall

  • Please advise if this step is missed for any reason as it performs some important actions:
"This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.
It also makes a clean Restore Point and flashes all the old restore points in order to prevent possible reinfection from an old one through system restore".

4.
Download and Run OTC

We will now remove the tools we used during this fix using OTC.

  • Download OTC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click Posted Image icon to start the program. If you are using Vista, please right-click and choose run as administrator
  • Then Click the big Posted Image button.
  • You will get a prompt saying "Being Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.

5.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. (This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only)
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

6.
Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If it will not start, go to Start > All Prgrams > SUPERAntiSpyware and click on Alternate Start.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
If you have a problem downloading, installing or getting SAS to run, try downloading and using the SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner instead. Save the randomly named file (i.e. SAS_1710895.COM) to a usb drive or CD and transfer to the infected computer. Then double-click on it to launch and scan. The file is randomly named to help keep malware from blocking the scanner.

Ran Dial-a-Fix. Upon pressing "Go", immediately got this error for msiexec.exe: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access the item." All other Dial-a-Fix procedures seemed to complete successfully. Any ideas, Fireman? (I haven't run any of the other tools yet--should I?)

Hello,

Maybe the malware has corrupted or made you loose permissions.

1.
Revealin hidden files

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

2.
Restore Permissions for msiexec.exe

Please download Inherit by sUBs

  • Now Navigate to the following file: c:\Windows\system32\msiexec.exe
  • Drag and drop c:\Windows\system32\msiexec.exe onto Inherit
  • This shall restore permissions to the application
  • The application should now run normally
Please indicate in your next post if this was successful.

**Do not run c:\Windows\system32\msiexec.exe

3.
We need to check your hard disk for errors.

To check the volume for errors:
  • Click start and then My Computer.
  • Right click the drive C and select Properties.
  • Under Tools tab press Check Now...
  • Put a check mark in both items and press start.
  • If you get a message click Yes to schedule the disk check and click OK and then restart your computer to start the disk check. Please be patient and let the system run. In some cases it might take a couple of hours and you don't have to sit there the whole time.
*NOTE: This scan could take along time to complete, but let it finish.

4.
Please run Dial-A-Fix again.

1. Revealed hidden files and extensions
2. Restored Windows Installer Permissions w/Inherit
3. Ran Chkdsk--no errors or bad sectors found
4. Ran Dial-a-fix again. This time, Windows Installer successfully fixed, and is now listed as "started" in services.msc (thank holy GOD!), but after trying to fix Windows Update, Dial-a-Fix gave this error message: "An error occurred during registration of this file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll (version 7.4.7600.226). The next dialog will contain an error code and possible suggestions." The next window read: "Error -2147023824 was encountered while trying to register C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll. The error text is: The specified service has been marked for deletion. Dial-a-fix currently has no suggestions for this error code." All other Dial-a-Fix procedures seem to have completed successfully. Any suggestions, Fireman?
