It's the same thing, with two names
You can call it whatever you like, but people mostly use name external hard disk!

External hard drives are used in a fixed location, e.g. outside a computer, whereas a portable hard drive can be moved from one location to another.

I'm quite confusing here because at first I agree with you Max..

"It's the same thing, with two names You can call it whatever you like, but people mostly use name external hard disk!"

but somehow yesterday when I want to buy an external the salesman said to me there's different things..

I thought an external can be use by plug it via usb to the computer..then the salesman said if I want to use the external I have to plug to a power supply 1st..on the hand portable only use usb..hmm..it makes me really confuse..

My friend bought an external before this and I never saw them connect to a power supply 1st..

Anyway..I want to ask you Max..Is there an external without using power supply? I am not satisfied because I see my friend using external without using any power supply..he just using usb cable..

Thanks.. :)

Hi,

Well, external without power supply is portable?
Isn't it? :)

External is fixed, like case, while portable you can carry with you like USB Flash

Do you now understand, it's confused but i think you now understand!

Regards,
Max

I always thought the difference was that portable hard drives work simply by USB cable (power is supplied by the computer), whereas external ones require a USB connection to the computer and a power connection to the wall.
