I have run into malware before, but nothing quite like this!

The other day I did a random late night Google search for "moon secrets", I know I'm a dork, but I'm into Science fiction :) I clicked on the first web page which was based at Pravda.ru...my mistake, but it was supposedly a testimonial from a Russian scientist about NASA covering up alien moon bases :) Without clicking ANYTHING i suddenly get a Windows Security window pop-up that looks completely legitimate. I realized however when it told me that I had a trojan and needed to do an online scan, that something was amiss. I guess I realized to late. I got some kind of fake malware scan called thinkpoint, and on my next computer reboot I was unable to get to my windows desktop without performing a fake scan, or giving some hacker in Latvia my credit card number :) Luckily, a boot into safe mode with networking was allowed, and I updated malwarebytes and performed a full scan, finding and removing 13 suspicious files. At this point, my computer seemed to be back in action! The happiness didn't last long. I was firing up my wicked flight simulator, and opened task manager as I always do to shut down some unneeded processes. I was shocked to see about 15! instances of mshta.exe all using about 7800k of resources! WHAT THE HELL!? I realized that I must not have completely removed my virus, and then proceeded to use a system restore from a date I knew was prior to my unlucky Google search. Post system restore I am STILL getting replicating mshta.exe files, but what i really noticed was some funny cursor behavior while browsing a news website. I don't think my DDS.txt shows mshta.exe, but it seems that the longer my computer runs, the more instances I get. It seemed like there was a lot of something I didn't command going on in the background while I was inactive. Scary. The really scary thing is that I think I may have checked my bank account online while infected with this nasty bugger. I can take care of that problem, but I am hoping you wonderful geniuses can help me nip this one in the bud! THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME IN ADVANCE! I am almost starting to enjoy destroying these bugs when I get them.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.
