Firefox cannot connect

Whenever I update Firefox, I get the message:-

Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.mozilla.com.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

This happens every time I try to connect to the internet. However, if I do a system restore, then Firefox works fine but keeps asking me to update. IE always works fine but is so slow, as ever.

Also Skype will not let me sign in, despite many unsuccessful suggestions from their customer service people.

Any ideas on these two problems?
