*** BACKGROUND ***
Hello, out there! You good folks are the last bastion of hope in a dark world, right now. Sorry this is so long, but it says in the newbie-FAQ to be detailed in our description of the problem and everything else. Thanks for bearing with me through the text-wall! HijackThis log and DDS log attached, search for "HIJACKTHIS LOG" or "DDS LOG" - "attach.txt" available on request. I've tried three times to run GMER.exe, but it never completes a scan and the system always hangs when I try to stop the frozen process. I have run DeFogger to disable my CD emulation drivers. Here's the situation so far:

I was browsing the comedy articles on Cracked.com with my adblocker and scriptblocker turned off (I recently changed
computers due to a hardware failure, and, my bad, hadn't updated all the settings in IE or Firefox - the former of which I was using, since I had a session I didn't want to disturb saved in Firefox.)
The computer screen froze for a second, and so when I tried to click the scroll bar, I accidentally clicked one of the ads.

This opened a pair of pop-up windows on my computer, which began displaying some very suspicious messages. Prizes won and all that rubbish. I knew enough to close out IE rather than respond. I thought that was the end of it, I switched to Firefox and resumed browsing. However, new windows continued to open themselves every so often without my input, and any Google links I tried to visit were redirected. My computer was also running about ten times slower than normal, and the task bar and start menu were unresponsive.

At this point dreading what I would find, I checked to see what processes were running, and found an extraneous svchost.exe process running, consuming 100% of my processor power and over a gig of memory. I shut down its whole process tree immediately and went into DEFCON 1 mode - grabbed SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, HijackThis, CCleaner, Registry Mechanic and ComboFix (the last of which I have not run, as per your instructions) and updated and renewed my license for my Antivirus/Active Protection program, over the course of ten or so minutes as the system started to experience heavy slowdown and issues, and that rogue Svchost kept popping back up no matter how many times I closed it.

I'd just managed to get the last of the programs set up and installed when the internet connection was cut off entirely. I immediately started high-intensity scans while doing damage control - hunting further for rogue processes and files on my own, shutting down all extraneous programs, the works, while Malware, SUPER, and my Antivirus - AVG Anti-Virus 2011 (Full Edition) scanned.

They came up with a total of roughly 550 bits of spyware/adware, and 150 or so bits of virus or malware (though most of that was overlap between the two detecting hundreds upon hundreds of tracking cookies, which were continually reinstalled and replaced every time I deleted them.) I'd estimate around 80 actual bits of spyware and malware and 10 or so serious viruses and malware-bits.

I removed and cleaned everything that was detected between those three programs. There were enough things listed that unless you want me to post them all up, I'm reluctant to spend the screen-space.

I rebooted and ran another battery of scans after removing and cleaning everything detected, and in addition used CCleaner to clean out all temporary files, temporary internet files and various caches, just in case.

The new scans turned up empty, and so I thought I was safe - until that rogue svchost.exe showed up again in my processes list and started eating all my CPU and RAM. And I was still getting click-redirects. I figured this might have been a little out of AVG's skill range, so I uninstalled that and installed Kaspersky Internet Security using their trial license. Ran a full scan of that while also hitting the disk with Malwarebytes and SUPER again, and made a HijackThis log to try and sort through and find anything suspicious.

Kaspersky, Malwarebytes and SUPER all came up clean, and I couldn't see anything wrong with my Hijack log. I uninstalled Kaspersky and reinstalled AVG, since I figured I'd do better with a program I had a full license for than one with a trial license. I disabled every startup item and service I wasn't on kissing terms with, and took to using Safe Mode as much as possible. I checked and discovered that all of my system restore points were infected and unusable, so deleted the lot of them, and I unsuccessfully tried "Last Known Good Configuration." I ran Registry Mechanic and let it fix everything it saw.

The virus laughed at me and called me a pansy.

I was getting desperate, at this point. This damnable bug wasn't playing by the rules. Didn't it know that it was supposed to roll over and die, after all that?

I've been researching and trying to figure things out for over a day, now, after all of the above, and I've made no more progress, and come no closer to killing this thing. So I'm here.

*** CURRENT SITUATION / VIRUS INFO ***
The situation is as follows: Intermittently, a SYSTEM-owned svchost.exe (one of six svchost.exe processes, and three
svchost.exe processes belonging to SYSTEM) will start to use up system resources (CPU / RAM) at a grossly-exaggerated rate, to the point where, if left alone, it will freeze and crash the system. Additionally, CPU usage is not always recorded, but any time the system is on the verge of hanging, closing the memory-bloated svchost.exe gets things moving again.

If I close the process, it will re-start at a low CPU/RAM usage level and not do anything for a while, though, after about five minutes, the computer's visual display will flicker, then mimic Safe Mode to some extent, even during normal Windows operation (the task bar turns from blue to white, sometimes running process-buttons on it will as well.)

If I pick the wrong svchost.exe, obviously, the system goes into force-restart mode. (Fear of doing this has caused the system to crash twice while I was writing this post.)

Even if I don't close the process, I will often receive - after a period of time - the message "Generic Host Process has encountered an error and needs to be shut down", or however that message goes - clicking "more details" indicates it's svchost.exe that's the "Generic Host Process."

Antivirus, Antispyware and Antimalware do not pick up any svchost.exe I can point them at, as a rogue process. The "System" process is constantly using up 100k+ RAM, and normally only uses 232.

No other viruses have been detected by any scan I've run in any program.

So long as I don't visit Google, no new browser windows open in Firefox. Google links are still redirected upon click unless I copy-paste them directly into the address bar.

Portions of the infected drive have been backed up in the past, but the back-ups aren't complete enough for me to restore the drive from a disk image. Reformatting is not an option due to potential of data-loss, but aggressive antivirus-and-antimalware tactics are welcomed.

I'm running constant scans with Malwarebytes, SUPERAntiSpyware, and AVG to stay ahead of the curve of newly-installed or reinstalled malware. Bits and spurts are arriving, including a rootkit that I've rooted out.

Anything else? Ask. Any assistance you can give, I'd be unbearably grateful for. Thank you so much if you've even stuck with me long enough to read all this. I look forward to hearing from you at your convenience.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Scan With RKUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • extract RKUnhooker to your desktop
Note** it is zipped up in a .rar file - If you do not have a program to unzip this type of file
you can get a free one from here - http://www.7-zip.org/
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

"just click on Cancel, then Accept".

information and logs:

In your next post I need the following

1.logs from DDS
2.log from RKUnHooker
3.let me know of any problems you may have had

My sincere apologies for the silence. In the midst of finals week, and in addition to computer and internet troubles, I've managed to catch a virus too. (Influenza, anyone?) Should have some time to sit down and sort this out tonight - thank you for being so patient, Gringo!

Sorry this has taken so long - had a partial hard drive crash during the week and I had to rush to restore 128,000 files that'd been deleted completely off the hard-drive. Finals also took chunks out of my time. You've been so very patient - here's the first steps in our working relationship. Search for DDS.txt, Attach.txt and RKUnhooker.txt to find the headings under which the logs can be found.

I also want to note that since first posting this, I believe I managed to eradicate the original virus - it turned out that, like many people with the "Google Redirect" problem, my router had been hacked and taken over by malicious processes. A full reset was able to clear it and restore it to safe status, and I supervised the owner in choosing a more secure username and password than they'd been using. Subsequent virus-scans and rootkit-scans let me eradicate quite a few bugs, and no more seem to have popped up - I have full logs of what I removed, if necessary.
I still would like assistance, though - I might have missed something, and I think it's important I get the "All-Clear" from you guys after you've invested time into this, too.
~SansSeraph

P.S.: I disabled Kaspersky and its firewall intentionally so as not to interfere with any of your tools or scans. Avast! Antivirus does not actually exist on my system - I think there were a few bum registry keys and application files that the uninstaller wasn't able to remove, but other than that the program has been taken off of my system long ago, and has erroneously thought it was installed for longer than I've had virus troubles.

P.P.S.: Suspicious programs like W32DaSM and ResHack.exe are programming tools I use for decompiling and editing .exe files and other compiled bits of code. You may notice uTorrent is installed on my machine, but I don't use it for anything illicit - I just keep it on there for the rare occasions when I need to get a binary or bit of source code licensed under GNU that's only hosted as a torrent. I've made sure that the folders it "shares" when running contain no sensitive information, and only run it when I'm using it, which is, again, rarely.
The ??? ??????s in the program listing are imported games from overseas whose names do not show up properly in the Windows Add/Remove Programs listing.

If you have any questions about anything else I've got installed or running, please ask. I'm an open book.

Hello

I see some leftovers but it looks pretty good But lets get it all out.

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Thank you for the quick reply! I've got Combofix on the computer now and am preparing to run it, but I had a quick question, first.

Reading through various other entries on this forum, I noticed that many people experienced significantly slower boot times, and slower computer speeds after running Combofix, even after it had been uninstalled. Do you know anything about this, and if so, what causes it, and how can I avoid it?

P.S.: Will I be alerted as to anything Combofix decides to remove? I assume that's included in the log, in case it picks up something by mistake.
Thanks~!

Hello

Combofix makes backups of anything it removes in case it removes something it should not have.

I run Combofix on at least ten computers a day and in 6 months I have had maybe 3 people come up and complain of the computer gettings slower after combofix so I would not worry about to much

I see! That's good, that's very, very good. Thanks for the reassurance, Gringo. Yeah, last time I had a bad virus infection, I ran MalwareBytes and it deleted an infected BCD, which left me in quite a fix. I managed to get out of that one, but it's good to know I'm covered with Combofix.

Incidentally, if we're being upfront and honest here, I don't think I'm going to have time in the next few days to exit out of everything and run Combofix the way it needs to be run. I know you're very busy and I don't want to waste your time checking a topic I can't respond to yet - could you maybe lock this for the next five days or so, and I'll PM you when I've got the logs and am ready to have it unlocked so we can continue?

Thanks!
~SansSeraph
