We have three computers in the house, a laptop (mine, and the one I will be addressing here) a desktop and a netbook. ALL are infected to one degree or another with the browser redirect exploit.

I recently replaced the hard drive on my laptop, and moved the original drive to slot 2 because it had all of my files. did a clean install of Vista Home Premium. The first thing after that was to install AVG 2011 - and that first search on Google had a link to a non AVG site - and I suspect that just by clicking on that stupid page, everything I have done since has been compromised. That is the first website I went to before realizing it was not the official AVG site.

I installed AVG, and updated. I scanned both drives. Clean! Then I installed Chrome and Firefox. I use Firefox for general surfing to unknown sites and disabled Java on that browser. I use Internet Explorer only for going to pogo.com - my guilty online pleasure. I won;t use IE for anything else - and I use it for pogo since the pogo doesn't play well with other browsers. i use Chrome for every day online stuff to trusted websites.

I activated Windows defender, which turns off mysteriously every day. I activated Windows Firewall. I installed HiJackthis - which doesn't find anything wrong. I installed Spybot Search and Destroy - ditto except for some cookies every now and then. I installed Malwarebytes AntiMalware (all of these I only go to the official sites, or to CNet.com, etc - to ensure good versions). I run Rkill - it only ever finds a java thing and shuts down Chrome. I ran TDSS killer and it found nothing. I ran Rootkit Revealer, and the first two searches after rebooting were not redirected. And I ran Hitman Pro - it found cookies, nothing else.

I have been on these forums daily, trying everything. My Hosts file is locked, and there were never any changes to it anyway. This afternoon I found a thread that referred to MBR rootkits - investigated and ran MBRCheck.

A few more notes - Windows Defender finds nothing on a scan, but is always turned OFF when I reboot.
GMER scan ended up in a blue screen, so I have no results or log.

I just discovered that AVG 2011 has an anti- rootkit scanner - I did a scan and it found no infections on either drive on my laptop. My browsers continue to redirect, and even clicking on a link here to access my post I was redirected.

UPDATE!

I will consider this topic closed for the time being, I figured out the cause.

I was running into various problems such as Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware refusing to allow the latest update. I didn't understand why all three computers were infected at the same time, they have different users. The common item was the Linksys Wireless Router.

When I logged on to the router I discovered the Static DNS had been reset to 213.109.65.28 and 213.109.72.203. I still don;t know how it got tampered with, the admin name and password were the first things I set when I installed it, and all computers using it have to use a pass phrase to login.

I changed the DNS back to valid entires. I rebooted all computers, and the redirect problem is gone, as is the molasses crawl of the browsers, especially IE.

I was able to update MBAM,ran a scan, nothing found. I still have the issue of the rootkit on the laptop, but I think I should be able to hack my way through that one. When I fix that, I will post one more update on this topic. if not, I will open a new topic later.
Respectability in art is appalling.

It continues to get worse! Go to bottom to read the LATEST.<br /><br />Hi - I posted a few days ago about the dratted redirect problem, and discovered that my wireless router had been compromised. That problem is fixed, and the other two PCs in the house are fine. My laptop has a problem, and I have not been able to make a dent in it.<br /><br />I thought that I would be able to remove the rootkits myself, but and stumped. Here are the results of MBRcheck - I have two infections:<br /><br />    149 GB  \\.\PhysicalDrive0   Windows 2008 MBR code detected<br />            SHA1: 8DF43F2BDE2D9451948FA14B5279969C777A7979<br />    111 GB  \\.\PhysicalDrive1   Windows Vista MBR code detected<br />            SHA1: 8DF43F2BDE2D9451948FA14B5279969C777A7979<br /><br />Below the other comments is the entire log. <br /><br />Also: Windows Defender is off every time I reboot. I had to do a system restore two times today, one right after another just to get the computer to work. I worked fine yesterday for the entire day after I fixed the router problem, but last night the computer locked up completely during the night. When I rebooted, something was running in the background because the entire system ground to  a halt.<br /><br />I rebooted to safe mode, and restored the first time. Then when I was reading email, the system again ground to a halt, and Defender came up with an error saying it had experienced an error. I restarted, and got this error massage: &quot;Windows Defender has experienced an error OX800106ba ...<br /><br />I once again rebooted in safe mode, and restored. I am now in safe mode.<br /><br />HijackThis shows nothing out of the ordinary.<br /><br />MBAM and Spybot S&amp;D both show the system clean.<br /><br />TDSS stopper - ditto. <br /><br />GMER showed no problem.<br /><br />HitmanPro only found tracking cookies. Today I installed and ran Prevx - it found no problems. It says the initial scan should take 2-4 minutes, mine took 9.<br /><br />MBRCheck is the only program that displays an error.<br /><br />Question, can ComboFix be run in safe mode? I have run out of options and that seems to be the only program that may help. I tried running yesterday in normal mode, but the program insisted that I completely remove AVG 2011 (turning it off temporarily didn't work) before running again.<br /><br /><br />MBRCheck, version out of desperation I ran bootrec.exe /fixmbr from my Vista CD. I hoped that overwriting the MBR would maybe erase this pest. No luck, I ran MBR again, and still the same results. <br /><br />I did it again, and ran bootrec.exe /fixboot too. No good.<br /><br />I ran - or tried to run superantispyware - after 7 hours of scanning I pulled the plug. <br /><br />In safe mode I ran ComboFix, and the computer crashed JUST as it was getting ready to write the log file. I almost threw this POS through the window. <br /><br />So I decided to bring in the big guns. I formatted the entire drive, I physcially removed the second drive, and reinstalled Windows from the CD. Then, before I was even online, I ran MBRCheck from a USB flash drive - guess what - it is STILL THERE! This rootkit is impossible to remove. It cannot be removed once it is on the hard drive - even a total format doesn't kill it!  I simply cannot afford to buy YET ANOTHER hard drive.

This morning (11/30) - I installed Spybot S&D, attempted update and update failed. Rebooted to safe mode, successfully updated and scanned - no problems found.

I installed AVG - or attempted in safe mode. Install failed after an hour. Rebooted in normal mode, attempted install again, succeeded. updated successfully. Ran system scan - took 90 minutes on a system with only Windows, Spybot, and Firefox installed. No problems found.

I have a ten minute window it seems on reboot before the entire computer bogs down to a crawl - so slow that I cannot bear to do anything. It took more than sixty seconds to simply type this web address into Internet Exploiter. I rebooted to safe mode so that I can surf a little faster, even if the pages are all but unreadable.

Gringo - thanks for your response.
A few more things - Windows has failed on the last several attempts at system updates - and then upon reboot after an update attempt, the system fails to boot. I have to run repair, sometimes two times to reboot.
Using IE, the system processor bogs down to 100% usage withing a few minutes. Other browsers don't seem to do that (Chrome and Firefox) as quickly, but I do have to reboot after every hour of being online as resources max out.
AVG fails to scan, but real time monitoring seems to be functioning.
Spybot S&D and Teatimer just disappeared!

Here are the reports you requested.

Defogger: no surpise, I have not installed anything except necessaries since last system reconfig because of problem

Hello

AVG right now is very hard to shut down long enough to run our scans and is actively going after some of our tools - for this reason we are going to have to remove it until we are finished

I would like you to uninstall AVG and run their AVG removal tool

You may install this antivirus while we are working and until we are done and then if you wish you may reinstall AVG - Antivir PersonalEdition Classic

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

ComboFix took almost an hour to run.The system never rebooted, I had to manually reboot after it created the log because the browsers would not open. Other than that, at leastthis time ComboFix completed. The first time I tried it earlier in the week, the system crashed.

Here is the ComboFix log:

Hello

I have been going over this topic a few times and I am starting to think that this is not malware related I will double check a few more things to be sure but combofix came back clean.

I do have an idea or to to check out

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan

Go Eset web page to run an online scannner from ESET.

  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • click on the ESET Online Scanner button
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
    • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options
Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.

I ran TFC, then MBAM - no problems found. I ran ESET - it took well over 5 hours to complete the scan - all other Apps closed. Logs below. However MBRCheck still shows the rootkit.

The computer refuses to install Windows updates without several issues. I was able to install one out of 6. The other five failed, and then the computer processor bogged down to 100% usage and I had to hit the power button to power down, the computer would not reboot or allow me access to anything - the mouse would move but no app would open.

Upon reboot, once again I had us use the install DVD and repair the start files. After repair, the computer seems to work okay.

I am wondering - with all of the boot repairs I have done, maybe the rootkit is unhooked but the files are present,, hence the MBRCheck results? Other than being unable to install windows updates - everything else seems to be working properly. I no longer have to reboot every 30 minutes as I used to a few days ago due to the computer processor bogging down - that now only occurs after a failed attempt at installing updates.

UPDATE

I was able to install two of the Windows updates, one at a time, with success. I will continue the process as I have patience to deal with it, until the rest of the critical updates are installed - although I don;t understand why Microsloth considers a dictionary update "critical".
Respectability in art is appalling.
